Running Bear's Coffee Shop LXVII

Chet: Is the RS-1 equipped with an Atlas Dual-Mode decoder? If so, the there is plug on top of the decoder that needs to be moved to shift from DCC to DC to from operating modes. It should be the green plug on the photo below. Atlas's website has a manual.

Willie: I know about waiting for bands or performers to finally start their concerts. Sly and The Family Stone once made us wait two hours to come on stage and then another time with a "No Show" after an extended wait which both happened in the 70's. Michael Bolden had a wait of over 2 hours. Best concert was Blood Sweat and Tears when they did a two concert followed by a another hour of music after they left the stage and then returned for an encore lasting an hour.

Train room today, but several basement projects in between railroad work. Cable installer left a mess in the Packer room. Ceiling tile push out of place, old cable and spitters left in place and just general cleanup. Nice work.

Tomorrow truck emissions test, blood test, go to the frame shop to have a tank car safety placard framed for hanging at the entrance to the railroad room and then to Walther's. Anyone need any thing from Walther's, just wire me the $$$ and I get for you...lol.

I enjoy the video clips everyone has submitted on the Forum. They give me real inspiration to get back to doing some work on the rail road.

Have fun.

Greg - I don't know why the service guy would have changed anything. When it first arrived, I put it on the tracks and ran just fine on DC as in the video I posted, When I went to the club, I programmed the locomotive to the road number and again, it ran just fine. The following week I went to the club, it would not run and that when we discovered that it was not picking up from the front truck. I did send Atlas an e-mail and it should take forever to get an answer.

I'll see what happens when I take it to the club on Saturday.

I think I like my DC equipment a lot better. Put it on the track, and if it runs, all is good. If it doesn't, it's broke. No programming necessary.

Louis: That's great news. Sometimes, tax audit winners are determined by who blinks first. They disallow, and hope you send a check, if you appeal instead, they send you a check.

I bet your RS-1 is equipped with a ESU LokSound Decoder. This sound decoder has a 25 second start sequence before the locomotive will move after you first apply any DC or DCC track voltage. After the start sound effects have ended, the locomotive will move.

Hope I'll correct.

Greg

Greg - It does have the ESU LokSound. Here is the video again that I took right after it was taken out of the box. It does go through the start up sequence before it moves. After start up, the headlight is on and it moved as seen in the video.

Now, when it is place on the tracks, I slowly apply power until the start up sequence starts. No headlight as when it came out of the box the first time. Apply more voltage and it just sits at idle. I just over 12 volts to it and it wouldn't move.

Chet: You could try to reprogram the decoder back to factory settings and then see what whats. With several of my DCC locomotives I found that reprogramming the locomotive's address "fixed" operating problems.

Other than this it could just be a defective decoder.

Perhaps a DCC expert at the club may have a different solution.

Good Morning -- 62 degrees and only expected to reach 76 for a high today. Overcast presently, but sun is starting to peep through in spots. Mucho Trebaho repairing stuff yesterday and more today. Went to Wally World after dinner for a few items. It was so cool that car showed that three tires were underinflated .. have to drag out the compressor this morning. Had to close the window last night - was really cool. Fall must be coming?

I'll catch up on the reading .. YOU Guys sure are yapping alot? LOL
Pictures and videos are great!

Greg - Maybe someone at the club may know. The first time it was run at the club it was programmed to the road number and I never ran it on my home layout after that. The next week at the club is when I found out that it was screwed up. I am wondering that if it was programmed to the road number that that may have done something that caused it not to operate on DC.

Good Afternoon All,

Hot as Hades here which is a good reason to stay inside. I spent about 4 hours working on the building today. I finished the building and support frame for the sand piping to the dispenser.

Louis- Great news. I think most people loose when they challenge the feds since they have rigged the playing field. So, you're moving for sure?

Joe- Thank you. Were you ever able to post your picture?

Dave/Willie- I have a similar story about Johnny Duncan in a military club (Schofield Barracks). He was about a hour late, played 4 songs then left. It was obvious he didn't care about the audience. It did nothing to endear me to CW music.

Chet- Thank you. Another nice rail photo.

Gene- Believe it or not my favorite concert was E.L.O.

I hope everybody has a good night.

Curt - Another fine looking structure.

Don from Atlas Model Trains called a bit ago about the RS-1 not running on DC any more. He said to run it on DCC and then trying it again on DC. He noted that there are occasions that after being gone through, the locomotive will not operate on DC on the first try. If that doesn't work, he says we'll go from there.

If it doesn't work on DC after taking to the club this weekend, it could go up for sale.

Later.

Curt: No I was unable to re-post the photo. Going to use the SLR and upload from the card. The sand house looks real. Nice work. Seriously, You should submit the project to the Magazines for publication. My best concert experience was way back in 1960, and it was free. Bill Haley and His Comets, were playing to the crowd, waiting for Kennedy to speak. Since the motorcade was about an hour late, we spent the time Rocking around the Clock. Kennedy's visit was anti-climatic, as he only spoke for about 10 minutes, and quickly left. Haley, not quite past his prime yet, was fun. I was 12 at the time, so all of this was cool.

Picked up my new cable modem today. Took a little time to program, but works fine. I was having trouble with the phone, then I realized that I had it in the wrong port.

Chet: It occurred to me that you may have to reset to factory default after operating it on DCC, otherwise, it won't respond to DC control. Once an address is programed, that's what it looks for. Dual DC/DCC mode is a factory setting. Changing from the default address (0003), changes the coding. Worth a try.

On many of the early Atlas Dual Mode decoders, to switch from DC to DCC required access to the board and changing a plug (bridge) on a eight pin connector to enable which function you required.

Good afternoon all,
Thought I'd pop in and say high!

The weather was really nice and cool this morning at 57* and 88% Humidity. This morning was the first morning I slipped under the covers as it got rather cool. It' also the first morning that I brewed a pot of coffee in a long time. Even the dry grass in the fields had a smell of being wet a bit. It's now 82* & 37% so it's not quite as comfortable.

Like Sherrel says hopefully this is the start of fall, early for a change.

I have some kind of cold that causes a bit if a tickle in my throat and cough but it does drain me of energy too. Being that it's so humid I guess I'll head over to the cool casino.

Curt: Your Sand House looks real good. Your beginning to get a lot of us a bit concerned we're going to have to start learning more to improve our skills.

Hope everyone has a good day.

Chet,

I don't know why the service guy would have changed anything.

I noted that he had said, according to your earlier post, that he had assigned it to the loco's number, so I think it's highly likely he turned off the DC function. It's something that is recommended when operating a DCC loco permanently on DCC tracks. Modern dual function decoders 'detect' which type of power supply is being used when the power is applied and automatically switch the decoder's functionality to suit. Because DCC track power is always at full voltage when the power is on, it can happen that a decoder on dual will be a tad slow in identifying that, especially if the track is live, when the loco is placed on it. If the decoder had been on a DC track prior to the change, there's a possibility it may 'think' the voltage is DC at full volts and take off along the track. I saw this happen with the first loco (a BLI AC6000) that I had taken to the other club I used to belong to, the first time it was placed on their DCC track.
