Chet, you are such an Alco-haulic!

Speaking of which, do you still want the RS11? Or maybe I can interest you in some RS3s

Chet, if you PM me your address (again), I'll slip them into a padded envelope and send them your way.

Good morning gang
72 degrees, weatherman says hot with p.m. thunderstorms, ya know, typical August weather.
I owe, I owe, its off to work I go!

Louis: That's great news. Sometimes, tax audit winners are determined by who blinks first. They disallow, and hope you send a check, if you appeal instead, they send you a check.

Boris I think you may be right, but they play with a big home field advantage. I filed my taxes electronically in early February and paid the amount I calculated I owed. In April they asked for additional documentation and they told me I had 30 days to respond. In July I finally hear back that I owe and additional $182.97 including $7 and change for interest, I had 10 days to pay. They take over 4 months combined to reply back to me and they still have the nerve to ask for interest.

I sent the check for $182.97 along with the request to appeal and an explanation.

All I got back was the $182.97, no explanation.

I still believe it was all due to the fact that I have not worked in over 10 years. I understand they wanted to verify, especially considering all the electronic tax fraud. I don't understand how they came up with the $182.97 and then decided I was right in the first place.

Good morning model railroaders......hope all are doing well.....going to be another day of 80 degrees & clouds. What a relief from the triple digits. Great help for the firefighters....
Here's one for you Lionel modelers...came across this add in an issue of Railroad Magazine--1953-- older than me...ha ha

Good Morning All. 79° and mostly cloudy right now, with 82% humidity. Ugggh! it's going to be a muggy day. High expected to be 95°. Had to install a new window unit A/C in the bedroom yesterday, as the 15 year old one finally shot a bearing. I was expecting this to happen soon and already had a replacement unit that I bought last summer. It seemed heavier than I thought, or is it me? Back to mowing today after the 2"+ of rain we had the past two days. At least I had six days off. Forecast has a chance of more rain Thursday through Saturday so I need to get as much done as I can now. Some of the lower more remote areas of the yard might just have to wait. Probably still too wet right now anyway. It's not the grass/weeds themselves, but the black "gumbo" clay underneath
Out in the train shed, I painted more track and did a little more ballast yesterday. I'm making good progress and will start to paint some of the bare plywood a brown earth color in the next day or so. I want to have enough area ready to minimize opening the can and mostly cleaning the brush! 30-40 square feet is about what I am shooting for.

Chet - Hope that your light showers helped some with the fires and smoke.
Dave - You're so right about some of these rock stars and their snotty attitude. I once saw Leon Russell in a small club in Dallas and he didn't feel like he was getting enough applause from the audience and walked off the stage after only 35 minutes, muttering about the unappreciative crowd. He was also almost 90 minutes late in starting. I haven't purchased any of his recordings since! Unfortunately I have had to stop going to live music venues due to the deterioration of my hearing. It's really too bad, as there are many oldies acts appearing just 25 miles away at the Winstar Casino just north of here in OK. Among the acts coming up are Steven Tyler (solo), Steely Dan, John Fogerty, Ringo Starr, and the Temptations. Numerous country stars and comedians as well.
Phil - I need that napkin set!
Louis - How's Catherine going to pay for her programs now that you have received the refund? Seriously though, congratulations.
Jerry - How's that Modoc fire going? Last report I saw was that it was nearly under control.

Headed out for my walk now. Everybody have a great day.

Willie

Good morning, everyone. 67 and partly sunny her in SW MO, heading for 89 today - summer has returned evidently! Wednesday and Thursday are going to be rainy, but the next 4-5 days will be hot and sunny. No coffee or doughnuts for me today - MOH and I are participating in a church fast - a partial fast, actually, where we avoid certain things - caffeine and sugar included - and since I don't drink decaf, I'm off coffee for these 3 weeks. (Don't worry - when this is over I'll make up for it in doughnuts) :)

Nothing to report from the train room, 'cause I caught a dry window and got the mowing done last night. I did get some spray painting done to start the next kit structure.

Have a good day everyone.

Willie - MOH and I saw The Temptations here in Springfield last fall, a two-fer concert with the Beach Boys. Otis Williams is the only original Temptation left, but man he can still sing and go through the choreographed moves. That was a great concert. Go see them if you can.

Willie I am assuming you are referring to the weight of the old A/C. If so those old units were built to last, rather than to just work. Are you sure it was only 15 years old? Back in the 80s I had a giant window A/C that was built in the 70s it had to weigh close to 200lbs. Good thing I had hard wood windows and brick walls.

I am a fan of window A/Cs if one breaks down a replacement is cheap, try buying parts for a central unit, big bucks!

This house does not have central air and I use window A/Cs. This year I replaced the last of the original units after 13 years. It still worked but these new ones are so much more efficient and important to my wife, much quieter running. I also like the new built in digital thermostats, set if and forget it.

I just heard Mortorhead's "Ace of Spades" being used in a Kia Soul car commercial. Are we getting old or what?

That reminds me, put on your music historians hat for me if you will, I have a question for you. I remember music critics calling Motorhead "the worst band ever" now they are revered by many. What happened? I think their early stuff was their best and they never changed much.

Catherine is going to have to make do. :)

Time for me to get to work. I am beginning to dismantle my layout to get ready to move.

I will miss this girl the most. She has been on my layout from it's beginning. It proves to me RTR sets can be a good way to get started. It came in my Lionel Horseshoe Curve Super Freight set. Combined with my Polar Express set the track and power supplies are the foundation of my layout. She is a great running locomotive and pulls as well as any I own.

To stay positive throughout this less than fun task I will keep reminding myself that I will have much more room when I unbox this stuff later.

Have a great day Everybody!

Everybody have a great day!

Thank you for posting! :)

Good morning. We're starting the day off at 50 degrees with a predicted high in the mid 70's. Got some over night showers and for the first time in a couple of weeks, I can see the spanish Peaks, the mountains just to the south of us. I'm sure the smoke will move back in at some point.

Karl - You are correct about me being an Alco-haulic. Even have some hard to find parts, such as a railing set for an RS-3.

IMAG1221.jpgI will pass on the RS-11. Sent you a PM.

I was unable to fine the decals for the striping on the pilots. I know that they are somewhere, but when we were doing renovations last summer to the room where I have my work bench, everything had to be moved and I still haven't found everything that I had rat-holed away. I think I really have enough as I don't know if I could custom paint and detail another to the quality of the fleet I have now. RS-1 numbers 350, 351, 352 and 354. RS-3's number 401, 402, 404, and 405. RSD 4/5 numbers 425 and 426. RS-11's number 450 and 451. I have so many locomotives that many are sitting on hidden staging tracks with trains behind them.

Gene - You are so right about the sound of the ALcos. The John Deere's of the railroads. I posted a video of the RS-1 I picked up for running at the club on page 44.

Speaking of the RS-1, it arrived yesterday afternoon back from Atlas after repairs for an apparent broken wire going to the front truck. Need some info from DCC people. When I first got it, it ran just fine on my DC layout as seen in the video I mentioned. When I got it back, I put it on the tracks an gave it some power. It started and went to an idle and that all that happened. No movement forward or back, no lights like it had when it first arrived. Talking to the service guy at Atlas, he said that he would assign it to the road number 802, which I had it set for at the club. Why will it now not operate in the DC mode ????

Dave - It sure is nice to have temps in the 70's for a change. I know I sure have enjoyed them.

Garry - I actually didn't spend long winter nights working on the layout. Starting the layout probably over 30 years ago, it was a matter of a little bit of work here and a little bit of work there. With no hobby shops around and no internet retailers around, things went at a slow pace as I would pick up supplies while were were on road trips. I should be a lot further along, but now instead of doing work on the layout, I go down to the train room with all good intentions of getting something done and end up running trains.

Joe - I guess I have the Alco made in China. I don't have a scale, but one of the first things I did when the Alco came back yesterday was to compare the weight of the DC version to the DCC version and they are pretty close.

Curt - That's a nice job on the roof. Well done. I enjoy seeing your work.

Louis - Looks like you won one with the taxes. At least you got something back instead of having to pay.J Don't spend it all celebrating. Good luck o the move.

Jerry - I can remember seeing those old Lionel ads. A blast from the past.

Willie - With the temps you have down there, I don't know how you could go without A/C. The only A/C we have is a window unit in the bedroom. So far we have actually had to use it once. At the altitude we're at, even on a day with temps well into the 90's, once the sun goes down, it usually cools off nicely. We just use a fan in the window to pull the cool air in.

Here's my rail photo for the day.

Chet..if it is a dual mode decoder it might have been programmed to not operate on DC. I always turn-off the DC operating feature on my dual-mode decoders. Having said that...do you know anybody who has a DCC layout that could check it on a programming track??
