Is it humane? Yes, maybe catmane! However the cat's reaction might damage stuff and knock rolling stock off to the floor. Better to keep the cat out of the train room to begin with.

When we had cats we never argued with 'Big Son'. The others, yes. Trains ran merrily on their way as he edged further and further away into the corner. Suddenly a flick with the paw the express would be on its side.
Big Son would win everytime.

If it is an unfixed tomcat, be careful about spraying it. It might "spray" back, which could be messy and smelly!

Spraying a cat from a mister is actually a recommended pet tip for cat discipline. They never jumped on my train table, maybe just lucky that way.

I'll leave it to you to decide the cruel part? You will only have to do it a couple times and they are smart enough to get the message. Use a "misting" bottle - not a stream!
Don't spray them EXCEPT when they are on the layout!

It's hard to believe a thread about keeping a cat off your layout could turn political, but here we are.

I tried that on the cat I have when he was young and it didn't work. He is "Mr. Stubborn" and just shrugged it off.

We did use it on our cats to keep them off the counter, the kitchen counter. We sprayed them once and after that all we had to do was get the misting bottle out and they would skedaddle!

It didn't work to get our boy cat from excessive meeowing, however. We gave up on that and let him howl if he needed to.
