Under Construction - Birmingham UK

Hi All

This is my attempt at representing a translucent roof as fitted to a lot of box vehicles.

Ahh that Smith's logo takes me back.

And what a lovely job you've done with it. How did you do the logo if you don't mind my asking?

Not at all,

Thats what forums like this are for, to share idea's. If they are useful to someone else then even better.

I drew up the whole side in adobe illustrator using a scan of another Corgi toy lorry, which I am told is accurate livery wise, as a guide. This was then printed at work as a photograph (we have a minilab). I delaminated the picture to get it as thin as i could and stuck it to the side with doublesided tape. A quick coat of Dullcote to seal it and job is done!

HTH

Jim, nice representation of a transluscent roof panel. I wish I had your skill to make those side signs.

Hi All

Time for another update, If you remember i did a mock up of work so far a while ago, things have moved on a little

The first few shots are taken from my eye height and give a good idea of what you will see when its all finished. (I am 5ft 9 BTW)

Applogies for the scruffy background!

Jim, that's the first time I've seen an overview of the whole junction area. That is some really complicated trackwork and scene building. I think you've packed the maximum amount of detail into the smallest area possible. :)

Where was I when this thread was started? For some reason I missed this Outstanding piece of work. Started at the beginning & couldn't beleive what I was seeing. Beautiful structures & outstanding track work. It's a privaledge(sp) to see what someone does w/their scratchbuilding. Fantastic!!!!

Thanks Larry and Welcome to the thread.

Miles, I will be using Carrs ballast secured with neat Klear (Futur over there) If you havent tried it its worth a go as it makes ballasting a doddle. Plus it dries in a couple of hours.

Hi All

Made decent progress today on getting the walls for the public side built and installed. Of course you people aint going so see them from your side of the layout but thats not the point is it? :tongue

A class 108 emerges from under the bridge. The new walls are in the background - They need weathering yet!

Amazing work .. Wow .. That is an interesting Urban railroad to model. I picked up many tips reading this thread. Keep the pictures comming

Hi All
I dont know what its like over there but here theres a big gap in available cars for the 1980's period. Escpecially ones that are true 4mm scale or are everyday mundane types and not supercars. There is one company, TPM, that make kits for a few of the more everyday types.

First up, a few Ford Escorts.

Next Bernards Capri with a Cararama one for comparrison

Jim, there's a big gap in the 80's here too. There area few 80's model cars, like the Escort, Pinto, and Chevy Caprice but not much else. Lots of stuff for the 50's and the 90's through today but the 60's through the 80's seems to have been overlooked. Maybe not many people model that era or something. In the US, at least, that was probably the worst period for railroads in terms of decline and bankruptcy, so maybe that's the issue. I don't know what company made those escorts but they look like they need a fair amount of work to make them look good.

As a modeler of 1984 BN I have to agree on the scarcity of period vehicles.
Someone actually commented that the inhabitants of the layout must not make much money, they're all driving 10 year old cars! :p

Awesome work on the capri by the way!

Hi Jim

These are not to bad. All of the parts are a good fit so its a simple build job. A lot of UK kits have parts that just dont fit together!

Jim

Sheesh, I feel there's a gap from the early 80's on. Most of the stuff we get in HO at least is not all that common. We need more common vehicles, civics, corollas, impalas, escorts, ect... Minivans as well...

Anyways, nice work!
