Good Morning All. 40° and clear. Another day of great weather here. My plans for a productive day in the train shed yesterday were sidetracked by Christmas. Got out the boxes of stuff that will not be used and sort through it again. Since downsizing the tree to 18" from 7', I just don't need all of this junk anymore.
Hey there Francine, you know that a bacon and cheese sandwich sounds great this morning. How much bacon? At least twice what fits.

Looks like building a laser-cut wood kit might just be my next project in the train shed. I am not ready for these structures yet, but I am itching to build one. Here's my two choices. What do you think?
Majestic Hardware & Feed

Or Stanley Stove & Boiler Company; which will be repurposed into a different industry.

Since I don't know your experience level and since you say you're not sure if you're ready for these, build Stanley Stove & Boiler. It's simpler lines will get you used to Bar Mills kits if you haven't done one before. His kits are very nice and quite buildable. There are a couple of guys on You Tube that have videos of Bar Mills builds. They'll help you get a feel for how these kits are done. Looking forward to following your build!

Morning all,

Partly sunny and an expected high of 62* in Doo-Dah. Currently clear and 33*
Time for coffee this morning.

Had a few minutes yesterday and ended up spilling a triple bin rack of odds and ends all over the layout, by the time I got them put back and resorted, I'd almost forgotten what I started looking for.

Sadly found that my Mantua 0-6-0 switcher has the couplers too low for any "modern" cars. I know I need change the couplers, but to raise them would look really bad. I could use different trucks under the tender, but I think I would really need to rewire it and replace the open frame motor. It does run fairly well. Can anyone say static display?

Willie: I was just getting into the office when you posted you were going back to bed.

Good morning everyone. 36 and clear out there. Nice day in store.

IBKen, Jim, Flip, Patrick, and anyone I may have missed - thanks for the likes and comments.
Willie - They both look like fun structures to build, but I personally like the Majestic Hardware and Feed - looks very interesting.

Took the day off work yesterday. What a great day. started out with coffee and a chocolate croissant at Panera, then off to stores I wanted to go to, including our LHS where I did a trade and got another coal hopper for the layout, plus some trees and a pickup truck. Came home, got the Christmas tree up and wired - we'll do the decorating later - and then did some landscape cleanup since it was such a nice day outside.

MBKlein order came but no time to get the people onto the Outpost building. Will do that this week and will post a photo or two.

Have a good day everyone.

Kadee underslung couplers should get you very close, as far as height.

Good Morning Again. It's now 41° and still clear, looking at 69° for a high later today. On the schedule later today is cleaning the ashes out of the wood-burning heater, always good to do that when I have no fire going. Finally getting back into the normal groove here, getting into the mood for the next holiday period.
Toast, sausage patties and over-easy eggs this morning Flo.
Thanks for the comments and likes from yesterday's post; Sherrel, Patrick, Phil, Jerome, Bill, Tom, Jim, Ken, Alan.
Poll regarding which laser-cut kit to build is clearly in favor of Majestic Hardware & Seed. Right now it looks like it's a 5 - 2 favorite.

All right now! I finished (maybe) up the candy store and that trio of structures has returned to the layout.

Terry - Sorry to read of the PayPal issues. My bank has this thing to transfer money that is mostly non-electronic and has a lower threshold of ID theft; it's called checks. It's an old fashioned technology that involves writing promissory notes to one another.
Justin - Almost all manufacturers wheelsets fit into everyone else's trucks. It isn't always necessary to match up components.
Greg - Nice job on the ATSF loco. I'll PM you my address for delivery (kidding).
Curt - That must be great news regarding the roof.
Sherrel - I think that the Frisco loco is actually the trailing one.
Bill -
Greg: that weathered Santa Fe is gorgeous! Actually, every inch of that photo is inspired. That is the level I would like to achieve someday
"One small step for man". We've all been there and moved forward, although I am not to that level on engines.
Alan - Thanks for the input. I am no stranger to Bar Mills kits, or American Model Builders, Blair Line and others. I have close to four dozen laser-cut kits on the layout already. Bar Mills kits are always interesting critters. Not only do the instructions not always match, but the further one gets through construction, the less detailed the instructions get!o_O They are my favorites despite their shortcomings.

Everybody have a great day.

My cousin sent me this. Thought it was interesting enough to share. Hope it doesn't qualify as "political" :D Enjoy, especially you, Ray!!

Johnny - that is by far the best answering message I ever heard! There will probably be numerous complaints to the school board. Great post!

Good morning. At 10:30 it's a chilly 56* heading up to low/mid 60's later. Coffee not working this morning, feeling I should go back to bed.
MOH has other ideas for me. Chores await as well as a shopping list..
Wish all a warm pleasant day.
Phil

WHEN I WAS A KID I WANTED TO BE OLDER- THIS CRAP IS NOT WHAT I EXPECTED.

Good Morning Everyone....sunny and windy here in Wisconsin. The Mrs. left early fro a day trip to a Casino in north/central Wisconsin. I hope she wins some dollars. Her luck changes from time to time and can win a lot or break even.

This darn cold has gotten me down and out. No energy to work on the railroad and just thinking about the basement stairs wears me out. Maybe after lunch I'll try to get something done. I'm going to Walther's tomorrow and just walking into the showroom usually perks me up. A have a short list, but who knows what will be on the bargain table.

Just to make sure that everyone knows the photo of the weathered Santa Fe locomotive I posted isn't my work but a guy who does extremely real weathering. He has done several locomotive for me along with caboose and a Russell snow plow. Once I get my camera working I'll post photos of the group on my CM&NR. My skills are improving doing ore cars and box cars, but no where near the skill set to do a locomotive like that one.

Best wishes to everyone....

Later

Greg

My dad used to have a Big Ben in his truck. Its been years since I heard that chime.

Also, that Zephyr is in Chi-town at the Museum of Sci. and Industry, isn't it?

Z.
I believe so.

I've told this story before, but it gives me a chuckle every time I think of it: My grandaunt lived in Naperville, Ill, in a house about two or three city blocks from the train tracks used by the Zephyr. My mother grew up in Jackson, MI, and her family would frequently visit my grandaunt for a few days. To keep my mother and her sister from playing on or near the tracks, my engineer-grandfather would tell Mom that the Zephyr travelled so fast that it would suck her onto the tracks and kill her if she got too close. Mom later used this story on me and my brother on our own visits; of course, I didn't listen, although I never went directly onto the tracks (couldn't have, really; as I recall, the tracks went through town via a deep, fenced-off cut). The punchline is, my 92-yo mother actually believes that story to this day. I know, because she repeated it as gospel when I showed her my Kato Zephyr.

Same here Willie, we have a a few racks the will hold up to ~150 logs altogether though we rarely ever have them stacked full. My problem this time, was that I underestimated the impact of not having direct sunlight to provide radiant heat [because of the thick rain cloud cover] on Sunday, so I only brought in half the amount of wood [on Saturday] that I should have gotten while they were still dry.

But it's all good, I melt-off a lot of calories hauling this wood :D!

Thanx Chet, the furnace is working once again - at least for the rest of the current season.

In other news...I found a CVS Minute Clinic in my area that actually had Shingrix in stock, so I went in and got my initial vaccination today. I still remember the horror stories our friend "New Guy" Bruce shared about his Shingles sufferings, never want to go thru something like that myself [hope he's doing ok]! I got the injection 6 hours ago and, as of now, I'm not yet experiencing any of the nastier side effects.

No layout scenery project time today so nothing to report on that. Maybe tomorrow...[?]
I had a shingles shot a few years ago, and then came down with shingles a couple of years after. Maybe it was the shot, but I don't remember the disease as being particularly bothersome: a mild rash on one side of my back, maybe some itching, but nothing else.

Greetings fellow railroad junkies! Been a long time. Been a busy, busy year. Not much time for trains, to busy building an irrigation empire. Lol. Hope all are well and enjoying the holidays. Looking for some advice, and I know one of y'all can point me in the right direction. Looking to start detailing my HO SP Daylight train soon. Where is the best place to find interiors, light kits, and other details accessories? I'm not worried about cost. This will be an ongoing project as I can swing it, so I can pick up a kit here and a part there. I'm also looking detail parts for my F Units. Both A and B. Figure I still ain't got space to build so I may as well detail the stuff I got. Been sitting in a box for too long with no attention given to it. Thanks in advance y'all. Gonna try to hang around a bit this time. Lol. Winter is here and business is a little slower. Not by much, but a little.

Jessie: Wondered where you drifted off too? Glad to see your still around.
I know that everyone has their favorite stores to go too - so I'll throw out this one as I have had good service from.
They will hold stuff aside for days and combine items to give you the best-combined shipping costs:
eBay Store: T-J Model Trains and Things (hope this helps)

It has been raining pretty steady and hard at times for the past 8 hours! HIP-HIP- Hooray!
"Wondermap" looks as if it will last the day! We are near the forecast high of 59* for the high.

Sherrill - thanks. I'll check them out. It's been a crazy busy year. My mother-in-law moved closer to us at the beginning of spring, so I had to take some time off to help move her and her 33 years of accumulated stuff. Then business picked up big time. The good news is the place she bought has acreage and we'll be getting part of it. So one day I may actually have space to build a railroad.

Afternoon All,

Ran some errands including refilling chlorine jugs for the pool. We decorated the tree yesterday (grandkids didn't happen). Friday I'm getting a haircut and this weekend I need to spray one side of the house with a 50% chlorine spray (gets a lot of shade). Hopefully I'll meet up with Phil and Jon next week.

Johnny- As a father of a daughter that's a teacher I can definitely relate to that recording.

Willie- Nice buildings and interiors. It's really nice since we have developed a couple of leaks. It will be done the beginning of January which is OK since it's our dry season now.

Greg- Have a nice trip to Walther's.

Beady- I have heard that tale before somewhere.

Jesse- Good to see you posting again.

I hope everyone has a good day.
