Running Bear's Coffee Shop LXVII

Hey Johnny-- looks like you are at a really fun stage in your layout. Getting that track down and running those first trains is something hard to beat!

Dave - I've been able to run trains for a couple of months on the shorter "inside" track that you can see in the photo, but I'm really chompin' at the bit to get the longer run laid down going around the two posts, and to get the scenery and landscaping moving forward.

ERIC-Very glad to read the GREAT news. Prayers and good Doctors are invaluable.

Do you need turnout twin-coil machines and or push button switches ?

News from this PET scan and Dr.s visit this morning.
Well whatever that "spot"/"artifact" is in that last scan is exactly unchanged in today's scan.
However, they still don't know what exactly it may be, they aren't terribly concerned that it is tumorous otherwise it would have grown since the last scan 2 months ago.
They are coming to believe it may simply be dead tissues - remnants of the turmor. Mom had taken today and had never seen the scan pictures before. I've seen them and it still amazes me how it went from this massive black spot occupying practically my entire jawbone to nothing. The Dr.s both said they like to show it off to people to show them advanced stage cancers aren't necessarily lethal.
They use those and it still doesn't soak in to me just how bad off I was. I have no doubt I'd be dead already had I not acted as swiftly as they told me to do from the beginning. When they use those words like "advanced stage", "serious" and "aggressive" I still have to remind myself that it's ME they are talking about.
I guess I refuse to "own" it as they say.
So I'll have another scan done Oct. 4th. After that result we may begin earnest talks about reconstruction so I can eat and drink again like you normal humans do. ;)

Just figured I'd best pass on the news so you all don't need to pester me about it.

Good going, Eric. I'll start getting the cheeseburgers, pizza and beer ready.

This signature is intended to irritate people.

I saw someone else's post about adding their "filler triangles" today.
Why didn't I think of this simple solution to add just little more needed real estate.
Then again when I was teen in the craft before walking away I never had the tools, money, or means to do such things as I've on my last layout and this one now in the works.
Again today I was asked if I'm going to pull off another mountain. Sounds I'm being rooted on to do one. I don't mind the work one little bit. The constant mess got a little old that's to be expected.
I think I'll just put in on simmer on a back burner like I did the last time. That seemed to have worked out well enough.

Thanks Phil. Sure was better than seeing a bigger spot on the image. They didn't have to tell me. I knew what to look at and saw no difference as they did.

As for turnouts - why do you ask?
I need motors for several but don't know if they would be single or double coil. How do I tell? Mine are all just run of the mill Atlas Life-Like inexpensive variety. Nothing with tortises or anything like that.
I don't have the real estate to accomodate more turnouts but could use solonoids on several I have now....... unless I build a helix and got vertical.
Never done that before and don't think I'm ready for that.

I've decided to add some more stuff to the cull.
A pair of Genesis GP9s in Chessie. One B&O, the other C&O. One has a Tsunami, the other has a Soundtraxx motor decoder.
Athearn RTR GP40-2, Chessie/GM50, with added Tsunami.
MTH GP35 in B&O blue and yellow, and an MTH GP35 in Chessie, both with factory sound.
I also have a string of Bethgons in CSX, some grey, some black. One of them has a no-longer-working FRED.

Terry you are tempting my resolve! I've decided to halt all train purchases due to buying a house and a commercial property for my wife to go into business for herself. I will be dismantling my layouts until after the move. I don't know when I will be getting back to building even temporary layouts like I have now. My energy level has reached a plateau that has been lower than I expected and my naps are more frequent. I am hoping it is just a byproduct of the heat and humidity.

Louis: I have not even considered roster expansion, interesting idea. I do find it strange, that we have so many Hall of Fame pitchers, who used to do their training in a saloon. These guys were expected to pitch 9 or 10 innings an outing, and managed to survive a long career. If Cy Young pitched by today's standards, he would have been an unknown, and there would be no Cy Young award. Tillman should have sat out the season, slowly rehabing his way back to the rotation. The O's don't need another one inning relief specialist.

The owners have a lot of money, or they wouldn't be in the game. TV throws a lot of money at sports leagues, but it's like making a deal with the devil, the Leagues cede control to the Networks. Wonder how much this factors in? Angelos is a TV guy, who owns a team, similar to Jimmy Dolan in New York. When was the last time the Nicks or the Rangers won anything?

Pitchers today throw every pitch at 100% effort, they may have no choice. Hitters are better today than ever before, even utility players can hit with power. Advanced scouting, smaller ball parks, juiced balls. I don't care what they say or how many test they show, I believe the balls have been juiced since 1987. You can't pitch to contact anymore, check swings can go out of the park. Add to that; todays arms are not conditioned for endurance.

I have always said hitting is much easier to teach and takes less practice to become proficient. Even little guys spend hour after hour swinging the bat. Every kid wants to have batting practice, they are disappointed when I say "it's time for infield practice" If you see kids playing with each other or their parent, what are they doing? Hitting the ball. In my travels this year I have seen only a dozen or so kids playing ball at their homes and I have yet to see any playing catch. I use to play hour after hour of wall ball by myself, simulating entire games in my mind pitching for both imaginary teams. When the neighbors complained I would play wall ball at the church until the Nuns chased me away. Then I would throw the ball into the air as high and far as I could and run to catch it.

I know there were days I threw the ball a thousand times. I never once injured my arm throwing. The man who raised me taught me to loosen my arm by slowly expanding how far I threw. Today they get on the mound and gradually throw harder and harder. I can remember the Orioles' pitchers playing long toss in the outfield before every game. Long toss is something they only do in spring training now.

Louis - Dang! I was expecting a "good/bad/indifferent" answer. Didn't mean to get you so wound up. I guess that the answer is bad. By the way, I don't disagree with anything that you posted, except the golf stuff. C'mon, whack a little ball as far as you can, then chase it down and play hide and seek with it until you find it (not always); and then do it again...for a hundred times in a row!!! But the scenery is great at places like Augusta and Pebble Beach.

Willie it's a sensitive subject. You can eventually stop thinking of the images of death, but the smell seems to last a lifetime. Sometimes I walk into a public bathroom following somebody who must have been sick and the smell reminds me. The image of people you know killed on the street can be hard to put out of your mind, but the smell of their intestines emptying is something that lingers for a very long time. Enduring pancreatitis at its worse was something that constantly reminded me.

I pray for our soldiers who have been in combat, no wonder so many commit suicide and have other mental issues.

Worse is when politicians that grew up far from the places where this stuff goes on talk about how easy the solution is. I briefly went to college and a few of the guys I knew from those days talk about solutions; the death penalty, extreme prison sentences, etc. They are only showing their ignorance. Take one gangster off the street and another takes his place. You could never pay for enough prisons.

Dealers don't actually work the street themselves. They have young boys, as young as 8 to early teens, they call "hoppers" because they hop from car to car making deals. They carry a few bags of dope each. The dealer resupplies them as needed. These are the gangsters in training. When a dealer and or his lieutenants go down senior hoppers take their place. A dealer will have many of these hoppers because they supply them with the money needed to survive. Everybody has to eat, everyday.

Nixon said it in a crude and racist fashion, but he was right. "The "people" (he used a different word) in the inner city don't need welfare, they need jobs." He was right and wrong. They need jobs, but the government needs to sell the drugs. Now we have welfare and even food stamps being exploited by addicts.

I would not cut a penny from these social programs, but I would provide assistance in finding jobs and better public transportation. More important I would have the government control the sale and most important the distribution of drugs. But they better sell cheap, these guys have plenty of cash reserves and will cut price to drive each other out of business. It's pure cut throat capitalism.

By the way it is not a black or white issue, every group of people has people using drugs. Furthermore, when I was young the big high volume wholesale dealers were all white and lived in the best neighborhoods. I've seen 2-3 galloon punch bowls filled with cocaine. They say "have some" like I would offer peanuts to my guest. They live behind reinforced steal doors and even bullet proof glass. You know not to try and rob them because they are the most heavily armed and have many soldiers on the street. Not to mention safe rooms to hide in. They have the money to pay for it.

Another thing to consider; many self-employed contractors are addicts. They work for themselves so that they don't have to be drug tested. I would like to see mandatory hair follicle drug tests every time you renew your license and if you fail; mandatory drug treatment. Lawyers would be the first to balk at that. From my experience they are the ones who use the most cocaine and what we called crank, now known as many things but its meth-amphetamine. You may be surprised to know who is using. The government's estimates are far below the actual numbers. Like that movie "They can't handle the truth!"

Golf! It's a lot of fun. Get yourself a used club or two and a bucket of range balls. Take them to the "north 40" and have a whack at it! See how many you can hit straight. I bet you enjoy it.

Once I learned to NOT try to hit the ball as far as I could I did better. Makes the ball easier to find :) I'm a true hacker, but if my shoulders were good I'd try to play again. Being a city boy it's nice to be surrounded by beautiful green scenery sometimes and very nice and polite people, for the most part.

GREAT NEWS E!!!!

Thank you so much and your timing was perfect, I was dwelling on gloom and doom and now I am a happy camper!

Good going, Eric. I'll start getting the cheeseburgers, pizza and beer ready.

Best wait until I can pass the masshed pototoes and jello tests. I can barely swallow water right now.

ERIC- The motors attache to the t/o. How many do you need? I should also have some of the push buttons.
I'll need to check that they are still working; no problem. Will need address.

Oh crap, another t/s coming in . back later.

Good evening y'all!

Chet & Terry
You have PM's

Eric Major congratulations on the test results. We'll keep praying for that October report! :D

Golf, for those who like to fancy the game, is a lost cause on me. My one sisters late husband was once a top rated Michigan state amature. He tried to teach me the game. We spent many hours at the Bay County Country Club, and also killed many of buckets of balls around here at the local range. You would think that I, who could hit a baseball to any part of the field I wanted when I was young, could at least hit a golf ball straight. Nope, aint happening. Not in a million years. Golf is just a great way to screw up a nice walk in the park for me.

Johnny Looks like you are off to a great start!

Beady Funny, I did something similar with my phone. Train buddies, get a Diesel horn blast, The ex's ringtone is Elton John's "the bitch is back", my Mom's was Darth Vader's theme, SWMBO's is Shoop by Salt n Peppa (from the Deadpool movie) The kids all have ringtone from the Minions, and there are a few others. Its fun to go to Zedge and update them from time to time.

Well, its almost bedtime, 5 a.m. comes early! L8ter!

Louis: Back in the day, the March of Dimes raised tons of money to fight Polio. You may or may not remember that every store had a collection box shaped like a miniature Iron Lung. Then one day, Polio was eliminated, almost overnight. The March of Dimes organization had a crisis. They won the fight against Polio, and had nothing to raise funds for. Ultimately, the organization had two choices, find another cause to raise funds for, or go out of existence. They ultimately found another childhood disease to raise money for. it's the same with the War on Drugs. If the government wanted to, they could stop this overnight. However, what would become of all the government jobs connected with this issue, the DEA etc.? Therefore, they go on with the charade while people in the neighborhoods go on killing one another. The only way this will stop, is if the client base stops using. Otherwise, forgetaboutit!

You are so right, it's not a racial issue, it's a people issue. It come at you from all directions. A 36 year old woman, classmate of my oldest son, recently died of an overdose. She grew up in the neighborhood, graduated HS, graduated Texas A&M, and was supposedly living a successful life... Opiates are the big thing here, that and opiate's street cousin, Heroin. many are introduced to opiates through Pain Management programs, all nice and legal. There is a lot of demand for short term feel good. Jail and punishment, isn't the answer. I don't know what is...

Back to baseball, I do not disagree with what you said, I'm not even against the modern game. It's just that it's hard on the body. Half the starters that began the season for the Mets are on the DL. Some are already shut down for the season. Tillman, is a sad example. he's a free agent after the season ends, and his value has dropped drastically.

Speaking of DL, don't you go and get yourself put on the DL. It's still summer, and you need to pace yourself.

I finished the Accurail three pack this evening. All that remains is some light weathering. I have to get batteries for the camera tomorrow.

Boris you are so very right, but what can we do? It has to come down to individuals taking responsibility for themselves. Like everything in life.

I love the game of baseball, I miss the old game, but I can't imagine not having baseball in my life. Modern baseball is far better than no baseball.

Did you get to see the Nationals tonight? They played some small ball and squeaked out a 3-2 victory. Hiring Dusty Baker was brilliant! I got to watch because the birds are on the west coast. Lucky me I got to Scherzer pitch! I love to watch that guy work. You never know when he could throw a perfect game, he is that good.

Dan Duquette said that Tillman has nothing to prove with the Orioles and will be welcome back next year. He said he need not pitch another inning this year and they will sign him according to how he has pitched in the past. I love my birds.

Don't worry about me my friend. I felt not so well after a tough day Friday so I rested all weekend. Slept so much my back was stiff. A good walk solved that now I am right as rain, thank God. I hope all is well with you and your family, including your cat, they are family too.

Now I am going to fall asleep watching the birds 0-0 after the 3rd.

Good night Everybody!

Howdy. Very busy day here.

Eric. ... I was very pleased to learn the scan results were favorable.

Ken D&J .... maybe next time. You were on a long trip for sure

I made it home. Brinkley, AR to home. Over 900 miles today. Over 700 miles today in the rain. Almost 8,000 miles for this 3 week odyssey on the Harley.
I'm tired. I'm going to bed.
