Running Bear's Coffee Shop LXV

Good morning ....

Chet .... The RS1 looks like a winner.

Ken in MD.... That sounds ambitious. Be careful .... That sounds very ambitious for a motorcycle road trip. .... I suggest you make sure crossing the Mackinaw bridge is safe for a motorcycle before planning on it. ... I've been on that bridge and it is very high above the water. I remember a scary trip in a winter snow storm over the bridge driving a Blazer. I was dumb to do that. Nobody else was on the bridge at the time. It was a about 3 or 4 days later when a Bronco fell off the bridge killing the driver as it crashed onto ice beneath the bridge.

Eric ... The refinery sounds like a fun kit to build.

-----------------

Below is work in progress for my bridge project. .... I just started running trains over the bridges. So far an SD7 and a GP7 are the only locos that crossed over the bridges. .... From left to right are a 17" truss bridge, a 210 scale feet steel trestle (viaduct) with a curve, a 9" truss bridge, about 18" of track over wood with curve (Scenery will be added), and a 20" truss bridge. ..... Total distance is about 8'..... I built all of the background scenes before building the bridges because I would not be able to reach over bridges very easily.

Much more work remains.

Garry - Thanks for posting the photos. You have been a busy guy. I can see a lot of possibilities for scenery with the new bridges. I am really looking forward to see what you caome up with.

Chet, I have an Atlas Classic Alco switcher, and an Atlas Classic RS3, both with Loksound. They both run and sound great.

Terry - Glad to hear that. As I mentioned, I have had excellent luck with my Atlas Alcos which are also the Classic, but have no idea what the Atlas Gold is. I figure that If I am going be running in the old Northern Pacific depot, I may as well get an Northern Pacific locomotive. One of the members has an RS-1 which I assume is an Atlas. Love the sound on the locomotive. Just like an old Alco, the John Deere of locomotives. I still can't believe how slim the selection is when it comes to Northern Pacific locomotives.

Terry - Already have on, in DC. Have has it for years. I got the DCC locomotive mainly for running at the club in Livingston. I needed sommething that could pull a dencent size train up the grades that they have on the layout. If this one is like my DC Alcos, it should do a decent job.

Well I got all 15 of the platforms done fro the refinery project.
I turned the page for step 2 and dumb-A me wasn't thinking when I used that dark maroon Sharpee on page 1 for step 1. Now I had to contact Walthers to see if they would be so kind as to send me another copy in PDF for I can print out another copy. Stupid me!! I ALWAYS make a copy of the instructions to use to work on so I can write notes and such on it without destroying the original. That way I ALWAYS have the original to make more copies should I need them.
Ever spill your bottle liquid cement on your instructions? It's not good.

However, NOT this time on making copies. I don't why. Over-zealous I suppose.
Hopefully, Walthers will respond promptly. In the mean time, I'll just do the best I can with what I can out.

Eric - You can't find the PDF on line?

Garry - No worries about the Big Mac. I've been over that bridge dozens on times on motorcycles and have never had an incident. Yeah, it's an amazing view of the water below when your on the metal grating. I heard about the guy who got blown off the bridge, but I think he was running at a very high speed when the wind gust picked him up. He went through the ice so there was no hope of rescuing him. The currents in the straights there swept him eastward. Another woman was blown off the bridge during another high wind event. I don't recall if they recovered her.

Afternoon All,

Nothing much happening around here. The grand kids are here and aren't happy because we make them read for an hour every time they are here for any length of time. We feel it's important and a very overlooked skill in school these days. Daughter will pick them up around 6:30 and then go to the youngest karate practice. Tomorrow is our 39th wedding anniversary. Time sure flies!

CA Dave- Good to see you posting again.

Chet- Congrats! I have a Atlas Classic (black box) RS1 that has WOW sound in it. It looks great, pulls great and sounds great. It's just great!:p

Garry- Excellent job on the bridges.

Eric- I have never been much good with stairs. As far as I'm concerned they always come out looking like crap.

I hope everyone has a good night.

Chet, there are a couple of things to do with your new Alco when you get it in a dcc environment.
First, set cv54 to 0, then hit the bell button (f1). That will tune the motor to the decoder.
Then set cv6 to 0, so it has a linear speed.
Then set cv 3 and cv4 to 125, it will start and stop more smoothly.

I thought you might want another one, so you can doublehead them, and pull a decent length train.
They both would have the same decoders, and would play nice together.

Curt - Glad to hear that you also are pleased with the Atlas Alco. I did find a product review on YouTube and it is impressive. Yup, the John Deere sound of the railroad industry.

Terry - A second one would be nice but i really shouldn't have got this one as I have eenuff locomotives. Grin.gif My Classic DC Aclos can really pull quite a load and I imagine that the DCC version should pull just as well. A single unit should easily handle a dozen or so cars on the grades at the club. That's good enough for me.

What ??? cv this and cv that. I don't have any steenkin' cv's, but I do have a TV which I watch in the evening. 20.gif Am I supposed to remember this ? Maybe I better print this off. I haven't tried to program anything yet. The guys at the club are nice enough to do it for me with a borrowed controller.

Don't forget, I am a DCC dummy.

Interesting turn of events may be on the horizon.
The admin of this place has told my Dad to tell me NO MORE BEER!
I guess he's one of those chicken-shits who can't talk to the offending party directly.
Anyway, he claims I walked out on the highway and almost got hit.
What a bunch of BS. Now Dad got on my ass and my brother's ass about to not bring any more beer out here to me.

A violation of this new edict means I'm likely to be evicted.
Today Bill came to get to do some running around. One of the first things he mentioned was to take over the apartment he just had. it's one of Dad's apts. and costs only $450 which is nearly 1/3 the price of place. I'm considering it. Bill had some work to finish up at Dad's after he dropped me back off so I told him to tell Dad that I'm interested in doing that.
I don't need some tyrant kid administrator telling me I can't drink. I don't know what the problem is really. I never was in the highway at all. I was close by no doubt but not in the travel-way at all. And.... how does he know/think I was drunk? Even though I can put down a beer through this g-tube it doesn't mean I get drunk - in fact I have not.
So where he gets his connections is in his own imagination.

I think moving to Dad's apartment would be a good idea. There is an attached garage where I can do all the board cutting I need to do without worrying about waking anyone.

I have an appointment with a Dr. in Champaign [IL] with an ENT reconstruction specialist Monday at 1300 to see about fixing me up enough to be able to eat and drink like a regular person once again.

Back to model building!!!!

Chet, Buy that Baldwin, it's a steal. You'll wish you had if you don't. Before someone else gets the last one available. Do it. You'll thank me

I did mention that I already have one in DC. An outstanding switcher but not the kind of locomotive to deal with the grades on the club layout.

They have two, with different numbers...

I could consider another RS-1 after I see how well the one I ordered works out, but not the switcher. I just got an Atlas S-2 recently.
