When NS and CSX split up Conrail...

...we know who got which trackage. Just curious, does anyone know how NS and CSX divvied up the motive power and rolling stock? I still see a lot of rolling stock with Conrail (CR) markings, and it got me wondering why it isn't at least "patched", if not repainted?

Inquiring minds want to know...

Locos get the priority on patches and repaints.

Conrail had hundreds of thousands of freight cars. Some batches of older cars will just run down the clock until they rust apart and never be painted. Imagine the cost in gallons of high quality durable paint not to mention the labor needed. It's enough to buy some new cars - or even pay stock dividends and help run the stock value up a bit more. The newer cars are more likely to be repainted.
