When trying to get the best out of a weathering piece, I like to set it on the layout, in a placement that also has been upgraded with dirt and weathered items, I often move kit that I know look good to enhance a piece as they compliment it, anything nearby that screams toy inevitably brings down any good pieces near it.
I hide anything I can that I know is a low grade issue, particularly any supports for figures, or goofy looking trees

but you can see various steps

As I like to weather old rolling stock, it is suitable to weather the buildings in a similar manner and to that mind any detail that was of the day is a nice add and then they too need to be weathered,as though the whole aged together as time slipped by
these brass shed baskets have nice detailing

then I decided to glaze it, but decided that messy the glass would be broken I took some plastic from a bacon packet and cut to size then cut holes in it, and added some dirt so not too shiny

Thanks for sharing your work Jas. Looks like it's a labor of love for you!
Ever since I took part in an online weathering competition,at which I did appallingly but there was so few entrants I still won a prize I have been fascinated by the subject.
Getting the look for the least effort Is my goal,as I have so much that needs doing.
I do get satisfaction from getting the look. :)
Although I am the first to admit my work rarely benefits from close up inspection lol.

Lots of great scenes and helpful information.
Thank you :)
Over the years I have either fallen over ideas, tried stuff to hand,or swopped ideas with other modellers. I am willing to try with anything to hand in order to get the look, and have used any number of unusual items along the way, especially from the kitchen bin lol.

One example is tea leaves, how many of us drink tea and just bin the leaves I tear open the bags and dry them in the window sill flat, and crush them between my fingers, they add debris and texture to a weathering job and to the grounding of building and make a good soil substitute

there you have given me a good idea, so thank you. ;D

Weathering
anyone reading the thread will see a common theme

i usually run water first,as it easily shows how rain falls,
the single best cause of rust
wch then makes it easy o lay down the colour
simple observation shows where water pools, and pooling against is a high reason for rusting

I regularly use dark brown, orange brown, thinned black.
The reason for this is they work, simples. (meerkat it lol)

pill box, used by the British as defence 2WW, they are dotted around often surviving in agricultural fields where a farmer may have used them.

as bought already has a light weathering, which works for 1940s to modern day,
but often they are over grown, overtaken by brambles and grass
5406377B-6C3D-4FFE-A6DD-6B41E016E1BA.jpeg

I just dabbed my blacks and greens as there is no metal as such no rusty browns, but as many are near the coast and get see wash seaweed is often seen on them, so yellow greens are often in evidence
