Spring 2017. Photo Fun.

Dave - Here's a photo of the MRL shops in Livingston, MT, the old Northern Pacific shop. I have visited here numerous times and they want it clean. Less chance of an accident and it's easier to keep it clean instead of having turn into a s**t hole and than having to work so much harder to clean it up.

By the way, that is an excellent scene.

Well I meant "dirty" in relative terms, (which btw is supposed to be the 1970's). As I remember the factories and workshops of that era were somewhat more grimy and cluttered than the squeaky clean modern ones I see these days (mostly).

But all that other stuff I mentioned, parts, equipment, tools, carts are seen in that picture, with the notable exception of people. I guess that's a sign of the times too though huh?

Thanks for the picture though. I will keep your advice in mind.

Looking towards downtown West Leesport, a Reading CC-1 is in the process of returning to its namesake city, along the Reading Company mainline, now part of the Philly & Scranton; A Branch of the North East Corridor.

everyone nice shots I want to start posting soon but in the middle of a move so that wont be happening no time soon but soon I will be back with my shop pixs

Wow, nice stuff, everyone. It's really too bad so few of us seem to want to, or are able to, take some images of our layouts. Maybe some of us are between layouts. I know I am.

Here is an image from two year ago when I was halfway through building my third layout. Then we sold and moved into town. I had just, and finally after six years, received my long-awaited BLI Union Pacific 4-12-2 in hybrid brass. Here it is:

Nice stuff everyone. Since I decided to stop by the forum to make a few comments, the least I could do is share a few pictures. I've been building structures off layout due to lack of space. I hope to fix that problem soon. Here's a Plasticville cathedral I bashed two together and landscaped. DSCF6198.jpgDSCF6200.jpg

Not only am I building my first layout (in decades...feels like my first one) but I just removed all my Atlas track and getting ready to tweak the track plan with Peco. Anyone want to see a picture of my foam board? ;) Maybe next spring!

Thanks to all of you who have shared. Great stuff!

I know how you feel about being between layouts, I've got a finished room, a pile of 1x4s, and a plan, just no time!
but I do have photographs and memories!

Really enjoyed that presentation!
You must have felt like royalty in your own private railcar?
Wish that the weather had been sunny and clear for such a nice ride and the photographs.

In this picture, the local passenger train is rolling though the country with is mixture of equipment. A branch line is in the right side of the photo and it curves out of view.

Here a model of the old Northern Pacific station in Gardiner, MT at the entrance to Yellowstone Park. The scene was recreated from photos of the area taken in the 30's.

50 Shades of Orange? PFE Car Painting Experiments

I have been experimenting with alternative paints for PFE Orange. I have an air brush but have a lot of constraints in using it as I live in a townhouse built on a slab and can only paint in my garage on low humidity days when I can find a parking spot for my car (the renters in the complex hog all the visitor spots.) I like to kitbash old cars I bought in the 1980's so these are not necessarily the finest most exact prototype renditions of the PFE class cars close but no cigars awarded. Also, steps have not been added yet as there are further modifications to each car to be made.

I have used three different paints in this exercise:

Air Brushed PBL Star Brand Daylight Orange.
Air Brushed True Color Daylight Orange.
Hand Brushed Vallejo Model Color 70.911 Light Orange with one drop of 70.910 Orange Red to 4 70.911

The results are:

PBL Star Brand Daylight Orange air brushed. Tichy R-40-2 kit built as R-30-16 rebuild. Built up underframe but I am working on a Bettendorf version. 1948-1950 paint scheme.
PFE 92022 SB Daylight AB.jpg
PBL Star Brand Daylight Orange air brushed. Athearn Wood sided kit with scratch wood ends and modified body. 1948-1950 paint scheme.
PFE 98607 SB Daylight AB.jpg
True Color Daylight Orange air brushed. Train Miniature wood sided kit with scratch wood ends and modified body on Tichy built up underframe. 1950 paint scheme.
PFE 74246 TC Daylight AB.jpg
Vallejo Model Color Light Orange hand brushed. Athearn Wood sided kit with scratch wood ends and modified body. I was experimenting with Tichy WP PFE decal set on this car. Came out OK. This car needs black paint on the hinges, ladders and grab irons as it represents an early 1940's rebuild.
PFE-WP 52602 V MC 70-911 Light Orange BP.jpg
The True Color Daylight Orange is the closest match to the color Intermountain/Red Caboose use on their PFE cars. But it seems a little too much of a tangerine shade when compared to the color samples in Thompson's PFE book 2nd edition and the new Southern Pacific Historical & Technical Society SP Freight Car Painting and Lettering Guide.

The PBL Star Brand seems a little to dark. It can pass as a car with at least one trip to the east coast without being washed on return to California.

The Vallejo Model Color was a surprise. It took three thin coats to cover the original yellow car paint but it went on with no trace of brush strokes. It is a viable option when I can't set up the airbrush particularly in winter when the humidity is over 60% in the garage.

More to come likely.
