New life for an old tortoise

I decided the other day to add another industry on the layout since I have so many covered hoppers but nowhere for them to go. Because the track will be tying into the mainline I’ll need another tortoise as all the main switches are powered, however I’m all out of good working units. Here’s how I revived one from the junk drawer before having to shell out thirty bucks for a new one.

Here’s one opened up, yes it does say not to on the label but I rip tags off my mattresses too. 😳

I soldered wires directly to the motor leads and ran them thru holes I drilled into the board.

Two more holes were drilled in the two halves, wires run thru those then the unit was reassembled. I ran them thru two more holes in the board to provide a little strain relief.

Here we are ready to install, you can see where the original contacts are worn off, these have been on two previous layouts and soldered a few times. Of course now there are plug and play connectors for these.
