Chris, I try to follow prototype pictures if I'm doing an actual RR. But for a free-lanced (like my A&P) or a fantasy unit, I pretty much use modeler's license. For the prototypes, there can be different style bells, horns, uncoupler bars, MU stands, etc. etc. It all depends on how detailed you want to get.
