Hello,
I'm trying to buy a UP 844 in Athearn Genesis or Rivarossi. I would like to know when engine is better? Any recommendations would be great.
 
I would opt for the Athearn because it is newer, but not for the DCC/sound version. The MRC decoders were nothing short of a PR nightmare for Athearn because of a high failure rate...ridiculously high. So, get the Genesis DCC-ready version and install a QSI Revolution or the newer Titan, or a Tsunami Heavy Steam. Don't overlook the new LokSound v.4.0, either.

I have the Rivarossi 844 and I've seen the Athearn Genesis. I would go with the Athearn. I't newer and better detailed. Phil
