Good morning all......Modoc July Complex fire still holding at the 39,000 + acres. Now the wind direction has shifted, smoke starting to move in. Headed for the mid 90s today.........
All have a great day.....

Morning gents,
Same ole same ole here.
For the life of me I can not remember which way to use the Xuron cutters on the track.
Is it side-to-side or rail-head-to-bottom.

I may try to get some track put down today.
At least I'll do some rough laying out.
E.

PS: Oh yeah, how far apart should I keep dual line tracks 2" or so?
I am using that Midwest cork road bed. It's about 2" wide at the edge of the beveled sides.
My outside curves are 22" radius I can't put any bigger radius because it wouldn't fit on the table.
I'll have to use my 18" R on the inner tracks. So it looks like I'll 4" separation in the curves which is good because I have a good number of inter-modal cars plus several 6-6 modern day diesels like the SD70ACe, an FP45, an a couple of the GEVO series (AC and ES). They like the bigger radius track of course.

Good Morning Folks. 70° and clear this morning. Barely made it to 90° yesterday, an absolute cool spell for us. Only supposed to make 83° tomorrow! Did some mowing after Mass yesterday and trimmed a few low-hanging tree branches that have been swatting me in the head as I drove under them.
Out in the train shed, I continued with one of my current projects of upgrading some details on previously built structures. Many of these were recycled from my previous layout and had stuff missing or broken. Another persistent problem is "dirt-dauber" nests that were built either in or on some structures. My old train room was not varmint-proof and besides furry creatures, there was a zoo full of insects and spiders. While I had removed many of the nests before setting them on the layout, some remnants and attached mud remained; which needed to be washed off. Along the same lines, I am redoing some industrial trackage in the same vicinity before I ballast the area.

Ken in MD - That scene just keeps looking better. I've kept up with the trials on the other thread.
Sherrel -
Guess maybe that wasn't a good idea after all? Widow lady across the street just shook her head, kids in the cul-de=sac ran into their house screaming, younger wife's laughed, and a couple husbands made death threats!
That's one reason why I live waaay out where I do. Still have to be careful when I get into or out of the pool (above ground, raised deck), not always successfully though! I've heard a few horns honk from the road when I wasn't paying attention.
Jerry - I see that ya'll are in for another record-breaker temperature wise today. Keep cool.
Garry -
Again, affordable health insurance was available to families before Obamacare, and the best solution is to go back to that.
Agree, agree, agree! Well stated.
Chet - Send your son and his wife down here for a few weeks, when you're done with them. I'll supply the food and beer or other refreshments. Regarding the Mexicans here, many also own their own businesses and homes, pay taxes and support their churches and community. At our small Catholic church, the pastor has confided that it's hard to actually plan a budget though, because they don't tithe. But there is a bunch of $50 and $100 bills in the collection basket every Sunday. That and loads of a localized variety of "huevos rancheros" at the weekly breakfast, that are donated by the families. Those are scrambled eggs, fried potatoes, sausage and cheese on a soft flour tortilla. Good luck with the gophers.
Eric - I use the Xuron from rail-head to bottom. Flush side to the part that you are going to use. Otherwise there is some extra filing involved.

Regarding Medicare. I would certainly have been willing to pay an extra dollar or two every week during my working time to continue to support it. That's the problem with Congress having their own "taxpayer-paid" plan. It's a shame that they had no forethought for many many years. Maybe some of these billionaires like Warren Buffett and Bill Gates who want to pay more taxes can throw a few billion to the fund!

Everybody have a great day and a great week.

Willie

Stay safe from the smoke, Jerry

ERIC ..Sure wish you had planned , at least 22" minimum -- Or maybe you should have stayed with B-B truck first gen locomotives and appropriate cars such as Chet, Garry, and others?

If I didn't know better, I would think I was back to my roots!

Just ignore and wave back at them - man after my own heart!

When you are done - maybe they would like to "winter vacation" in Sunny Southern Calif?
All the Mexicans around here, that I have come in contact with are all "God fearing - hard working - good people".
Sure would like to partake in a few of those "breakfasts"?

Both Medicare and FICA would have been in much better shape had the Johnson Admin eft them alone -
So much for the 'Great Society'!

Everybody have a great day and a great week. Second that

Say PHIL -- If you feel the wind on your back on a motorcycle - you could be in a heap of hurt! LOL!

KEN in VA.. By chance, Are you going near Grand Junction? I have a friend (engineer BNSF) there who has a dedicated layout building - like 40 x 60 in his back yard. Let me know!

Willie-- Can't make the connection to your comment?

No, that wasn't on the route plan Sherrell.
I'm back in Clarkdale, AZ now. Had a great ride through Monument Valley yesterday. Wrapped up the ride with rain coming back down to Flagstaff.
I'll be going a few places with my sister today. Tomorrow will be going back over to Cornville to see the Wyoming Division MR again.
Gotta change oil in the bike before I head off to San Diego. I might do that tomorrow.

Good morning all, we have 70 and are headed for 88 today, supposed to have some nasty humidity.

2 tracks--interesting to hear some fire news. I used to be a firefighter for the BLM and Forest Service, worked a lot in the Casper,Wyoming area also north of Boise, Idaho. Kept me trim!

Those things are nothing to mess around with.
--------

A few odd jobs for today, also some finishing on the depot and maybe try to get some good pics this afternoon or tomorrow morning.

Good morning. We're starting the day at 57 degrees heading to around 90.

Eric - I usually cut the rail vertically and use the smooth edge to join the rails. So far as spacing between tracks, 2" on center is pretty well the norm, but if you are using longer locomotives and rolling stock, you might want a bit more in the curves. Seeing that you are using 18" and 22" radius curves, you might teat run some of the longer equipment to make sure that there is enough clearance.

Not much to add. The sreeenking automatic updates on the computers are driving me nuts right now. Gotta get all of them up and running.

Here's a quick rail photo to start the day.

Later.

Howdy ..

Chet ... I like your covered hoppers and your images of train tracks.

Eric ... With those tight curves, I suggest you limited your trains to 40' freight cars and four axle diesels or short wheelbase steam.

Ken in MD ... I, too, like your trees. If you want to tell us about them, I would be interested.

Willie ... Thanks for agreeing with what I said. I'm only trying to say what is the truth. In fact, Health & Human Services will spend over $1.1 trillion this fiscal year. That consumes about 1/3 of total revenues of $3.4 trillion. It is way too much money. Spending must be cut back. I wonder what dictionary defines "government:" as a source of funds to pay individuals' living expenses. ... I hope I don't upset people, but I am telling the truth.

Happy Model Railroading, everybody.

Garry - That statement reminds me of what I hear for a couple of months during the start of tax season. My wife is a manager/preparer at H & R Block and one of the most common things that she gripes about is abuse of the system. Many people come to have their taxes done who work only a couple of months a year. So obviously there are jobs and they do qualify for them. But they don't work for the entire year because then they wouldn't qualify for "Earned Income Credit", housing subsidies, food stamps and other "freebie" (to them) benefits. They readily admit this to her. Yet they pay Block $150 extra to have taxes done before the start of the tax season and another $100 or so for a "Rapid Refund" (essentially a payday loan from a nearby bank) to get their (taxpayers) money early. To add insult to injury, when my wife asks them what they intend to do with the money, the number one answer is to get a relative out of jail, followed by pay the rent. It's sad that society has gotten this way. If they actually worked the entire year and had a steady flow of income instead of this "burst", they would probably come out much further ahead. But then it would mean working instead of sitting at home on their a$$es. This applies to most of them, there are still a few real legitimate situations out there.

Willie

EDIT: Oh, they also pay the Obamacare penalty for no insurance.

Terry,
I live in Maryland and our premiums have gone down, $12 per week this year and our coverage is the same. I have kept my Doctor and I take 7 prescriptions per month that cost me a total of $4.61.
.

What????? I'm paying almost 4 times more for SWMBO and myself than I was paying for a family of 5 just a few years before. Thankfully my employer pays half, but I'm still on the hook for $125.00 a week for the two of us when it used to be $37.50 for 5 of us! No to mention the deductible hikes! Geez!! And prescriptions, Oy Vey!

Remember guys, I'm living in a nursing home so I count myself lucky I was able to build any sort of railroad much less something bigger than 22" curves. I figured anything over 18" would be an improvement over my other railroad (still in GA). I maxed out my current real estate using 22".
Besides all that all my engines ran ok on my rr in ga which had only 18" curves everywhere.
The problem cars were mostly the 80' passenger cars and most of my deep well intermodals.
I thought I was doing good to be able to bump that up to 22" on this go-round.
It's all good.
I don't have any of that lengthy rolling stock here to test but I do know my SD70ACe ran for about 30 minutes without issue the other day. I figure all the others could do the same.

Today's project. The incandescent lights on my layout have their own controlled 12 volt power supply. I turn down the voltage to approximately 10 volts to lengthen the life of the lamps. A voltage meter on a control panel lets me know the supply voltage to the lamps.

Somehow, I didn't wire or remember what I did to run the controlled voltage to a section of the layout so today I'll trace the wiring if possible or install new wiring to that section of the layout. I'll start at the control panel and hopefully there's I'll find the two wires for the incandescent wiring in a terminal. If not, I'll have to run additional wiring to the un-wired section of track and install a terminal strip.

Simply, I can turn off the power to all devices since I have separate power supplies for the layout signals, DCC, LED lighting and turnouts, plus the incandescent lighting to help identify the wiring.

Hopefully, this turns out to be a simple project.

82° and 44% today. Maybe I'll go out on the deck and sit in the sun while I work a few crosswords. Got some vodka and Bloody Mary mix the other day, so maybe it's time to kick back a bit.

MIL is still in Rehab. Physically, she seems to be improving, but the four of us (wife, BIL, SIL) have noticed an apparent mental deterioration, and we're all wondering if this could be the beginning of the end (she's 94). In the meantime, the four of us have been cleaning her apartment in case she returns (not certain, even as a best-case). This isn't easy, since she's a hoarder. BIL has been taking point, and we've been going down there a couple of days per week to help. Some of it's kind of disgusting, like the two used adult diapers belonging to the husband of BIL's other sister that were under the guest bed; they were under there for either 6 or 18 months. But don't let me get started on "him."

All this has inspired us to work on organizing the basement. Actually got the wife's corner done, and now we can start on the storage area. From there it's my "living room" and, finally, the train area.

This signature is intended to irritate people.

Afternoon All,

Humid and rainy today. I saw the vampire this morning then came home and did some chores. The Tichy windows and doors I ordered came in today. I have always been impressed with Tichy- quality products, very quick shipping, and very low shipping charges. Now I am waiting on the wood I ordered from NESL.

VA Ken- Looks like you're having fun on your trip.

Willie/Garry/ Sherrel- Thank you for your opinion.

Sherrel- Thats quite the layout.

Ken- Outstanding scenery.

I hope everybody has a good night.

On a completely different front. I have posted over the last few weeks about how much more than normal our rainfall has been. Some of you also know that I have a hayfield on a part of my property. The field was cut and baled five weeks ago. This is what it looks like now.
7-31-17 009.jpg
The camera angle doesn't quite show it, but this hay is about 4" taller than I am, I'm 5'4". It grew this much in only five weeks! Time for a second cutting. Around here, the first cutting pays for the fuel, fertilizer and labor to produce it. The second cutting pays for itself (less labor and no fertilizer), and in this case will produce a pretty good profit. I'll get a third cutting in about eight more weeks. This is also why I have been mowing more than normal as well.
