Wheel sets

Hey guys,
I know this is a basic question. How do I know what size wheels I need for rolling stock? I want to change the plastic wheels to metal. I see 33" and 36" are pretty standard, are the sizes based on wheel diameter or the distance between the inside of the wheels? I just want to make sure I get the right ones when I am ready to buy them.

Thanks
Scott

You should be able to tell which plastic wheels are 33" and which ones are 36" by comparing them side by side. The 36" will be taller. Thats the only difference. The space in between them is called the guage of the wheel sets, and they are all standard same size.

Most modern rolling stock (except for Autoracks) use 36" wheels. Most older rolling stock 1940s to 1970s use 33" wheels.

Thanks for the info Michael. The few cars that I have are life like brand and I have 2 athern grain hoppers. I know what to look for now.

Thanks
Scott
