Got some quiet time over at the club last night and was able to take my Intermountain AC-12 for a lap. This is Intermountain's third release of this loco and now utilizes a Northwest Short Line drive train and Loksound 4 decoder:

The only thing I was confused about was the whistle. Sounded more like a diesel horn. May be just the distortion on the video, or is that authentic for the AC12?

Yes, cab forwards often used air horns because the steam whistles were located near the rear of the boiler, making it difficult to hear at crossings, etc.

Makes sense. Of course, I've never heard an actual AC12 in action, so I wouldn't have thought about the logic of using an air horn up forward. Thanks!

Actually it had more to do with the horn was for use at crossings to warn motorists and so forth, and the whistle was used to talk with towers and other engineers.
