Track Clearance ?

I'm in the process of designing my layout and at a quandary as to clearance issues such as between parallel tracks and tracks that curve next to a vertical mountain wall .
Is there a standard that is used for track and/or car clearance at the sides and height and is there a gauge that can be used to check these clearances.
I'm also looking for a steam era trestle bridge to span 14" to 18" .
Any advise in these areas would be much appreciated,

The center to center of tracks is limited to the radius of the curves that the tracks follow. I like to keep HO tracks a minimum of 4" apart (center to center)
If you use 22" radius 4" apart in a curve might be to close but on a 36" you will be fine
.increase the radius and you can bring parallel tracks closer.
the over hang of a long freight car will also limit what can be place near the tracks. It is a good idea at Stations, tunnel entrances and bridges to have atleast a 12" straight section before the tracks pass near any of these. this will help reduce the cars from catching them
