Good morning, all! A beautiful day, sunny with temperatures predicted to be in the low 70's. If I had a convertible, the top would definitely be down. Awaiting a call from the dog groomer to pick up my little buddy. I intend to try and mow the back yard this afternoon. Maybe a train or two after that.

Pilots and tugs - My experience with pilots and tugs goes back aways and may be somewhat different today. We used to have to escort what was called a "hot ship". The ship had been in a communist country within the last year. We would go out to the "sea buoy", along with the pilot boat. Sea buoy is the first buoy marking an entrance channel. In my case 3 miles offshore. The pilot would board the ship, and take it into port. Again in my case it would either go to Galveston or up the Houston Ship Channel. If it were going to Galveston tugs would meet it near the anchorage, then assist with the turn into Galveston harbor and then to dockside mooring. If the ship was going to Houston, the pilot would take all the way up to Morgan's Point where the ship leaves Galveston Bay and enters the San Jacinto River, Tugs meet the ship at Morgan's Point, assist with all the turns in the river and then dockside mooring. We would sit waterside to the ship while US Customs sat dockside for the duration of the visit. Then we did everything in reverse, tugs worked the ship to Morgan's Point, then dropping. pilot out to the sea buoy. From Galveston, tugs would assist to anchorage area, drop of and the pilot takes it to the sea buoy. The Houston Ship Channel is 50 miles long and only the last few miles does a tug get used. Note - 2 different pilot organizations are used, Galveston / Texas City and the then Houston Pilots.

Dog just called, said he was ready to come home.

STAY SAFE

Afternoon All,

Started out the day with inside chores. In the train room I drilled the holes for the lighting wires then mounted the two recent builds. I plan on hooking them up electrically tomorrow since I didn't want to do it today (pain in the rear end). After lunch son and I planted MOH's plumeria trees under her supervision of course.

Terry- Nice layout shot.

Guy- I had no idea that the ice was that thick.

Mike- I'm very sorry about your friend's loss and his GF's injuries.

Sherrel- In answer to your question it varies by location.

Bill- Neat "old time" photo.

Patrick- I hope your knee feels better soon.

David- Nice scenes and gunpowder cars.

I hope everyone has a good night and I'll post again after the repairs to the forum.

Having a divorce on my "record", i'm probably not the best at giving any relationship advice...but i have the house. We purchased my house after looking for houses together, but i was the one who picked the house, she didn't like it, kids didn't like it (her kids), my dad didn't like it...Well i was the one doing 99% work on the house, especially heavy work; stones, concrete etc... Now i live in it, it's peacefull, it's away from city and high traffic area. I have place for my trains and scratchbuilding. In the morning i go out on the deck when still dark, field in the back with forest pass that, forest on the other side of the street in front of the house. One thing i learned, if i'm the head of the household, then the house has to fit my criteria. I'm glad i listened to myself on that.
If we divorced we would fight over the house new v old parts both have good and bad

Well, howdy there internet peeps, and those who want our Congress critters, Judges, and any other elected official to wear sponsorship patches on their suits. Time we know who's paying for which one. As for Age, 70 seems a good stopping point for politicos and judges/justices. Let them enjoy the grandkids, and a fun hobby like toy trains. ;) Don't waste it trying to rake in more donations.

That's all on the political front.

Heading out to the convention tomorrow and got my booth sign made up
Still got more stuff to do for the Conv. Back later.

The son is in San Antonio inspecting a couple jobs they are doing down there. One of the bridges they are remediating the bats from is next to the UP tracks. He said he is seeing a few box cars with real obvious welded steel across the doors, no pictures though. He said the UP safety supervisor on site said those are are carrying military hardware!

Just about every other auto rack he says has a strange to him grating panels on the side panels

Said the safety supervisor told him it’s an experiment. Graffiti spray gets deflected away from the vehicles onto the inside grated panel.

Good afternoon All!!!!
Love the morning's post Bill!
Had coffee with a member of the Broake & Howe Railroad.
He relayed a story of how the best man at a recent wedding asked all the men in the room to go stand by the person who made the most difference in their life.
Poor bartender was almost crushed! o_O o_O o_O 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

Good Almost Noon All!

45F @ 80% and partly

Supposed to get to 51F by 1500 but suspect way more than that. Almost time to turn dem pellet stoves OFF.

Thanks to Bob for dealing with this site ( his others too ) and hope he gets some rest between stuff. Been there done that! My 1st all-nighter doing this sort of stuff was cira 1995 putting in a datacenter for me. At that time multiple DSL's were the backbone as there was no way I could afford a T3 or better. Fiber was an arm/leg back then for those big shots. Geesh, even here in Libby we have 146G fiber both directions; just a few years back multiple T3's via uWave over the top of Indian Head with a shot to Spokane Valley. Times have changed.

Y'all be good and hang in there. It will get fixed!

After going to the nursing home everyday and watching my wife waste away I decided to update my diet to something healthier than it's been in a long time. Everything I read on this subject says salmon is the number one thing you should being eating. A Mcdonal's Hamber is about the worst thing for you. They say not fish farm salmon because they use grains to feed them and dies color the meat. The best salmon is Alaskan wild caught which has 3 times the Omega 3's as the farm raised version. So I looked how to buy the Alaskan version and there's a company that sends it frozen. They say it's caught frozen in a few hours after they catch it and send it to you that way. Anyone here every try this?

Mike no one in t
I just read an article where NYC is going to start charging vehicles a $15 congestion fee.

Does the money grab ever end!
Mike no one in their right mind should be going anywhere near New York City now. I watched a show the other night where the brand-new mall that just was completed in 2016 is being closed down because of all the crime. All the tenants want out of their contract. The $15.00 just gives you one more reason avoid it at all costs. Don't be counting your money at 3 am or maybe even 12 noon.

Yes, wild caught salmon is by far the best. Once you've had it, farm raised salmon is definitely sub par.

I live in Seattle, so I can have fresh salmon on occasion. However, most of what I eat is the flash frozen stuff. They catch it and freeze it on the boat to keep it fresh. Then they thaw it later, filet it and put it out for sale. All of the Costcos around here have it. If you look closely, you'll see "previously frozen" or something like that on the label.

I wonder if Costco carries it nationwide, or it's just a regional thing. It's seasonal around here, but it's around much of the year.

So, here's an interesting story about Salmon and the like. There's a place in Seattle called Fisherman's terminal. As the name suggests, that's where the fishing boats unload their catch. Back in the early 2000's a local shortline railroad called the Ballard Terminal would spot refrigerator cars on a nearby track and one of the processors would load the frozen fish into them and then they'd be shipped out to various parts of the country.

I was an engineer and conductor there in those days, and there was a slight chance the frozen fish you were buying was hauled in a boxcar in a train that I ran. Obviously that was only a tiny portion of all the fish that's sold but still it was an interesting operation.

My friend Steve Olson posted a photo of the "Reefers" over on Railroadforums.com. Here's a link to it:
