Good Morning All. Happy St Patrick's Day from a 3rd generation American Irishman. It's currently cloudy and 54° out on the porch. Expecting sunshine later and clearing overnight which will mean a lower overnight low. The rain gods came and went yesterday, leaving me with 0.95" in the rain gauge. That's wonderful for the garden and trees, but means a real growth spurt in the grasses and weeds that comprise the yard.
No change in the corned beef brisket in the sous vide bath, it still just looks like an inert piece of pink meat in there. At 0800, the timer showed 8 hours and 45 minutes to go. Even though I have read some recipes that advocate searing it at the end, I never seared one when cooking one traditionally in the crockpot, so I am not going that route, at least this time. I have two more in the freezer to try that on.
The Birthday dinner for my daughter in Dallas yesterday went well, but the rain was still scattered during the trip down there. The place was kind of classy with a light jazz quartet (Keyboards, Double Bass, Drums and Singer) playing right next to our table. At least it wasn't loud. My 9 year old granddaughter really enjoyed the music and said that it was better than Taylor Swift! Pricey though. After the tip, 4 adults and 1 kid came to $597.00. It was helped along by two bottles of wine at $59@; we took a partial home with us. However both the food and service was excellent. I had the 16 oz Rib Eye, wife had the Lamb Chops, (well I actually had three of the six), daughter had the Beef Wellington, SIL had the Mahi-Mahi fish and granddaughter just had a side of Mac & Cheese. I did get a to-go box since I wasn't expecting the lamb chops and they don't reheat as well as steak.
Needless to say, I did not visit the train shed yesterday due to the evening activities and the slightly extended trip there. Unfortunately we did come across one accident on the way home, but we knew it's location and I was able to make an exit about a half mile from the site and use an alternate route for the last 20 miles home.
Here are a few random pictures from the archives.
Mike - You had to mention the pool, didn't you? During our recent spell of 80°-90° days, my mouth watered every time I passed ours under it's winter cover. But the water is just 58°, and yes it's about 6 weeks too early for me to think about it seriously.
Karl - Regarding the pavers: My soil is black clay, mushy when wet and hard as concrete when dry. I set the pavers in slightly above ground level and by the next year they have settled in and all is good from then on.
Sherrel - That East to West wind pattern is unusual here as well. It happens a couple of times a year and always brings rain in from Louisiana. 300 days a year here, the wind is out of the South; thus the West Coast planes headed to Love Field in Dallas (90% Southwest) fly directly over our house before turning South about 15 miles East. While they are generally in the 6500' to 7500' altitude, they aren't nearly as noisy as military jets at any altitude.
Terry - I got the Email earlier this week from ScaleTrains. It appears that they finally received the existing Exact Rail inventory that they acquired from their acquisition. Prices still don't appear to be 50% off as advertised though.
I was never a Duran Duran fan either, I liked my music a bit less "poppy". They're appearing just 22 miles from me on May 19 at the Winstar Casino in Thackerville OK. I won't be there.
Everybody enjoy their St Patrick's Day however you celebrate.
