Newly Aquired Freight Cars

Can someone please clarify how this would have been done.

Freight car from say UP is bought by SP, and was required urgently in service.

1) Would it have ran under it's old colour scheme untill it could be repainted.?
2) Was the old company name and logo painted over till it could be totally repainted.?
3) Would it have been totally repainted into it's new colour scheme before going into service. ?

The usual answer is #1. Occasionally but not often #2 might happen. Most likely however, the reporting marks only would be blanked out and new reporting marks and possibly a new number would have been painted in their place. A new total repaint might never happen.
Thank's Willie.

Just saw a mixed freight roll through while eating at a track side restaurant. The boxcar was originally Montana Rail Link. Reporting marks were sprayed with self etch primer and new ones added. Seems to be done recently as the primer is still gray and white letters and numbers still well defined. I was about 75 feet away while the train was slowing down to 10 mph.

I've seen old Burlington Northern covered hoppers several times that seemed to not have the reporting marks updated back in August. Otherwise you'd think a train from the 80s was rolling by (a bit more weathered now of course).
