New tyres for Fleischman Steam locos.

I have a Fleischman loco, type DB 05-003 with 12mm diam. driving wheels which need new tyres. My understanding is that the biggest tyre they make is 8mm so it will be fun and games getting them on! My problem is the removal of the connecting rod pin. What is the safest way to extract that?
