Cookie Cutter Foam

Has anyone that is using just foam for the table top tried to use the cookie cutter method and if so how did it work? What thickness of foam did you use and what are you using for road bed? Also how was the noise factor over a plywood base under the foam?

Thanks in advance for your reply

Jim

I have and you can see it in my layout build thread here:

This is two inch thick and is cookie cut to match the 1/4" ply sub-roadbed. Then glued down with latex caulk. The 'scenery' part of the foam is temporarily removed to shape the grades for the track. To shape the grades I used a steak knife to remove larger thicknesses and a SurForm tool

to smooth out the grade. At one place I cut too deep so I just glued on another piece of foam then re-cut, a fairly easy fix of a goof..

On one section a second layer of two inch foam is added for an elevation of 4 inches above the lowest grade.

I can add more pictures to my thread if you have addition questions that need pictures for the answer. Just ask.

I was asking about using strictly foam, no sub road bed; just the foam and either cork or some other material for the road bed.

Ok, the techniques for the cookie cut foam would be exactly the same as I did. Just top off the foam with the roadbed of your choice.

I've done my small N-scale layout with cookie cutter foam.

I used two layers of 3/4-inch blue foam with the upper layer as the cookie cutter layer.

Then I used blocks of pink foam as risers to create the grades.

Haven't done it, but 1/2-in extruded foam seems pretty flexible. I've always glued it down flat onto a hollow core door and carved down, but I might have to do some experimenting and see how it works for grades up from reference level.

I like that idea better than having to buy the Woodland Scenics ramps.
