Chesapeake and Ohio

I thought I would try doing a photo tour of my layout. I decided a good way to do this would be to follow a local freight out of Clifton forge yard. I am going to start with getting the locomotive from the round house.

We will be using a Mantua Mikado that I detailed a little trying to get the C&O look. The hostlers are about to back #1234 out of the round house.

They back it across the turn table.

100_3906.jpg

and stop for coal, water and sand.

100_3913.jpg

Now it is coupled up and the crew is preparing for the days work.

100_3915.jpg

We are on the way.

100_3916.jpg

As we pass the Gern facility we meet another train

100_3922.jpg

100_3923.jpg

It is locomotive 1633 pulling empty coal cars. He is probably going to Clifton Forge, where we just left.

Finally the end of that train. we are close to our first stop.

100_3926.jpg

We will have to drop the caboose on a siding here that goes to American concrete.

100_3928.jpg

We then pick up 2 box cars and a tank car.

100_3929.jpg

Now you can see why we had to drop the caboose off of the main line

100_3930.jpg

All finished here now to the next stop.

100_3931.jpg

As we approach Barboursville Station we meet another train. It is a Mikado #1189 pulling a mixed freight

100_3933.jpg

This is where we switch ends of the train and return to Clifton Forge yard. there will be several stops on the return trip. This will be posted later.

100_3935a.jpg

OK now we left the local at the end of the run, now we need to head back. This is when the team track would be taken care of if needed. Today it is left alone and I didn’t think to get a photo of it. So now we will pull away from the train and go through a cross over so we can pass our train and get the other end

100_3940.png

100_3943a.jpg

Having arrived at the other end we go through another crossover and couple to the train again

100_3944.jpg

Now we start the return trip by getting onto the correct track so we don’t have any surprise meetings

100_3946.jpg

and we are on the way. Our first stop will be at the Barboursville station. Here we will uncouple the train from the caboose.

100_3947.jpg

We will be going passed the station a few hundred yards to a switch, after clearing it our brakeman sets it for us to go onto siding.

100_3949.jpg

We are going to get a PRR box car from Jones transfer and spot a NKP box car that is already here.

100_3951.jpg

At this time only one car can be there at a time. The loading platform has been enlarged and awaiting track. We will also be dropping a couple more cars to be spotted later.

100_3986.jpg

We now come out of the siding and get our train. make all of the safety checks, 2 short blasts on the whistle and we are on the way again.

100_3953a.jpg

Her we are going past J.E.L. Minerals mine # 37.

100_3956.jpg

Now we go through a short tunnel.

100_3990.jpg

Come out the other side and cross Big Ugly river.

100_3993.jpg

Come around the North side of the town of Big Ugly and we are now approaching our next and last stop.

100_3994.jpg

Uncouple the caboose.

100_3995.jpg

going past Big Ugly whistle stop. This is also where passengers can make a connection with J&M railroad which you can see behind the shelter, To be toured at a later date.

100_3996.jpg

Now we are hooking up to some cars on J&M. Some of these we will take with us some will remain and we will leave some.

100_3998.jpg

After all of the switching is finished we are now going back after the rest of our train

100_3999.jpg

Get hooked up check everything and lets go home.

100_4000.jpg

Now we are back where we started. The end of a long trick.
