On a recent return flight from Europe I watched "The Big Year", a comedy staring Jack Black, Owen Wilson, and Steve Martin, about a competition to spot the most bird species in a single year. Apparently this is a real thing!?! It got me wondering if anything similar existed in the railroad enthusiast community, or what might could be created.
I think basing it on locomotives makes sense. Possibly refining it to lead locomotive units. And then maybe something simple like the cab number. Or to make it more difficult (for people who aren't as up on all the builds) it could be done by make / model of locomotive, but still require it to be the lead locomotive of a train. No counting locos sitting in the grass on some abandoned siding.
Are there any casual competitions like this in the rail-fanning community?
