A momentous day!

The biggest problem I remember having with them during my early years in the hobby, was the sideways pressure they exerted against each other, making it virtually impossible to run any car that I couldn't add weight to (such as tank cars) without them derailing on curves.
Was that really a problem with the coupler or was that a problem with the coupler being mounted on the truck? I had a similar issue with my Marx and Tyco, but not the Athearn or MDC.

Yeah, most of my conversions included lopping off the truck mounted couplers and putting on gearboxes to the cars themselves. Mostly height adjustments, but I did have one tank car that turned out to be a bit of an engineering project to make it happen. The running reliability of that particular car improved about 628%!!!
