1st Layout

Within the next year I will be constructing my first HO layout. I have some ideas down on paper as I kind of want to construct towns from my home state of Kentucky. I plan on there being a lot of large peaks and valleys. Is there a way to build a layout using ZERO wood or benchwork? Has anyone done this?

My layout tables are welded together w/a mig welder using 2by2by1/8th angle. Then I covered that w/1/2" 4 ply CDX. If you are going to have a lot of grades & hills w/big bridges an open grid frame is much better.
