Pros:
|
Great detail, awesome sound, 1st time any Maryland Midland loco has ever been commercially available in HO scale

Cons:
|
Headlight incorrect, antennas frail
|
|
Well packaged, take your time getting it out! Once out, the first thing you notice is all the paperwork include with each engine. QSI has included a comprehensive manual with the sound system. Also included are the detail parts and a "magic wand" for programming. I purchased 3 of these engines so straight away they went to the programming track to have cab numbers assigned. 1 unit did not want to program, so out came the book and the "magic" wand and I did a reset on the main. Back to the programming track and all was well!
Placed them on the layout and one by one, called them up. WOW! The sound is incredible! And even at the factory setting of 75%, the volume is loud! Horn, bell, dynamics and other sounds were right on! Great job guys!
One quick caution: if you buy a QSI equipped engine and want to consist it, you must have it "running" to consist the engine. (sound on) IF it is just parked, it wont consist. I wont bore you with the details of how I found out!
The only issues detail wise were the included firecracker antennas and the headlight. The antennas are too frail. They all broke upon installation. I replaced them with Details West brass pieces. The only other detail concern is the front light. The bulbous upper headlights were gone by the time Midland took posession of the prototypes. (Remember, these were former CB&Q/BN units) Someday I'll get around to removing the lights, then weathering the units to match the photos I have of them.
Operationally, these engines are smooth as silk, and considering they are a little light, pull well. They are not as heavy as a P2K SD9 because of the 2 speakers used take away from the weight, but hey, its a tradeoff I'm happy to make!
All in all, they are performing perfectly and are a joy to operate and to hear!
