Description: Gunderson's 48' all-purpose well car was introduced into service in 1993. The car was a design extension of previous well cars that carried containers only. The all-purpose feature meant that it could carry either containers or trailers giving it greater versatility for intermodal trains. The height of the sides are lower than previous container-only well cars to allow trailers to clear while being loaded into the car by lift equipment. This design also featured two hitches for transporting two 28-foot trailers.
Standard MSRP:
$24.95
Undecorated MSRP: $19.95
Estimated Delivery:
February 2008

Features:

* Floor with correct ovals and cut-outs.
* Two hitches
* Etched walkways
* Four IBC bins.
* Detailed brake components
* Prototypically accurate paint schemes
* Recommended 24" radius

AccuMateŽ couplers are made under license from AccuRail, Inc.

Pros: Well Cast, SUPER detail, well painted, and crisp lettering
Cons: User installed walkways, tad on the light side

I'm sort of depressed by this Atlas offering. I've never felt this way before with Atlas products!

Pros:
  • The model is very well cast, nothing seems you be out of place, and it holds a trailer correctly.
  • Paint is smooth, not applied too thick as to obscure details
  • Lettering is VERY crisp, they even wen through the effort to model the patch on BNSF cars (very faintly darker red).
  • The detail in the walkways & brake rigging is well done
  • Trucks are the normal, excellent Atlas, with Very black, free rolling wheels

Cons:
  • Big nut holding coupler box screw, visible to top of coupler box, and they couldn't even mask it by painting it!
  • User has to apply Etched walkways
  • User applied ladders and brake wheel
  • Weighs in on the light side (not ample enough to run a bare table)

I have to commend Atlas in doing a better job molding & detailing this car then Walthers. However they sacrificed allot by going the plastic route, where as the Walthers car is die-cast, thus making it effective for use in a bare table train.

Packaging seems more secure on the Atlas then Walthers version, which is a plus, not sure how it'll hold out once I add the details.

I just wish someone would to the 53' well version, FEC is running hundreds of them!
