Description: Prototype Information:

As a prototype, the SD40-2 was the most popular second-generation diesel with sales of over 3000 in the U.S. and more than 700 in Canada. There were many variations of this popular diesel because of the long production run.
Model Information:

For the first time in model railroad history, our HO SD40-2 Mid-Production features functioning ditch lights which can be switched between alternating (flashing) and steady lighting modes on-the-fly. You can toggle the alternating ditch lights as the locomotive approaches urban areas or road crossings on your layout, or elect simply to run them all the time, however you'd like to enjoy it.
Model Features:

* All handrails and grab irons are factory installed, making the model ready to go out of the box
* Functional ditch lights that can be switched between alternating and steady modes on-the-fly
* Locomotives feature directional Golden White LED headlights and illuminated preprinted numberboards
* Sound friendly construction with a speaker housing in the fuel tank
* Ditch lights can be synchronized with horn or bell functions with the installation of an 8-pin sound decoder

Pros: installed details, nice ditchlights smooth running
Cons: still not etched steps or see through grills

I got lucky with this current run, Mid-production SD40-2. Kato did a fine job with matching the paint scheme to the model. My only issue is patching it to BNSF, I've gotta move it to the 70xx+ units.

In comparison to a BNSF Dash 9 from Kato, this unit is a MUCH better offering. Details are installed, they've got a new packing system that keeps the unit from moving around too.

I just wish Kato would have gotten with the times and did see though grills, and/or fans.

I'm not very impressed with the motor though. The older Kato units I have are much quieter, this one sounds like an Athearn blue box unit.

Over all, if you're looking for a new SD40-2, this is the way to go. They even have BNSF's low headlight now (can't wait to get one of those).

Pros: different headlight modes
Cons:

I just bought one, but when i put it on the rails, it only went forward. I did a couple of laps around the layout, and like magic, it went backwards. Guess it just needed some warm-up.
