Description:

Prototype Information:
The headliner of GE’s 1993 freight locomotive line was the 6 motor, 4400hp C44-9W “Dash 9.” Slightly longer than its predecessors at 73 feet, 2 inches, the C44-9W used a new HiAd, bolsterless low-weight truck that was designed for better grip on the rails no matter the weather. A split cooling system lowered engine temperatures and fuel consumption as well, granting these locomotives a longer operation life and lower overhead costs.

Pros:
|
Smooth running, well built

|
Cons:

Chunky molded on sand hatches & antennas, no staggered grills
|

This will be my first factory decorated Dash 9 from Kato. However, I feel, that the extra money spend for the slightly smoother drive is not worth it.
Kato's sand hatch details suck compared to Athearn blue box. Grabs are oversize. They only offer a straight grill, Athearn offers the staggered grills, that are used on most BNSF units. They even included the wrong trucks, only Santa Fe units should have an Early Hi-Ad, the BNSF H1 or H2 units (mine is an H1) should have Late Hi-Ad trucks. The Air Conditioner lacks detail, it looked like they added it as an afterthought, there's no grill on the side, or fan on the top of it.
Neither company has gotten the cab windows, or the "X" panels correct.
Being a decorated unit, its going to be slightly more annoying to replace the grills, to get the correct staggered pattern of the prototype.
The $51 I spent on it is semi worth it, however, I'm glad I never bought one at full price.
