Description: The RF-16 locomotives were built by Baldwin Locomotive Works. They were also know as Sharknoses because of the shape of the front of the locomotive. In prototype service they did perform as well as they should have. They were slower than expected and suffered from several maintenance issues. They did, however, find a home as locomotives on slow heavy freight trains such as coal drags.

Features include:
• DCC equipped and is for use with all NMRA/NEM – compliant DCC systems
• Main-track programming
• 28-step speed control
• All-wheel drive
• Can motor
• Die-cast chassis
• E-Z Mate Mark II couplers (with metal coil springs)
• Compatible with conventional DC-powered layouts
• A and B units available
• A unit paint schemes

Pros: Paint
Cons: silver lettering on red, no engineer in cab

I have the Baldwin Demonstrator A and B units. The paint job on both is very well done. The silver lettering on the red is a little hard to read, however. At first the units appear a little chunky but after looking at photos of the real thing they are not that chunky. They come with the plastic grab irons and hand rails attached. They are truly ready to go out of the box. Speaking of the box the packing is different from anything I have seen before and it proved difficult to remove the locomotives from the plastic.

I have a DC system thus I will only be reviewing the locos performance on my layout.

Right out of the box the locos ran and ran smoothly. They are very quiet. They have the pulling power necessary for my layout. The A and B unit in combination easily pulled a 24 car train consisting of 40’ boxcars, hoppers, and reefers and 50’ gondolas which is amount the maximum length for my layout.
