I needed another small locomotive for some switching at a lumber mill I am building, and this little gem is just what I needed. General Elactric made these from 1940 to 1956. They were powered by 2 Cummins 150 hp diesel engines, each powering one traction motor which through siderods powered and additional axle. I was pleasantly suprised with how well this little locomotive runs. It is a DCC ready locomotive, but I only run DC, and this locomotive runs extremely smooth and will creep alone with no problems over switches even with its short wheelbase. On flat level track it handled 10 freight cars, which is about its limit. It was able to pull 4 freight cats up a two and a half percent grade. The side rods add interesting movement to the little switcher. The LED headlights are directional and look good even at low speeds. If you need a small industrial switcher, don't pass this one up. I was lucky to find this undecorated unit in yellow and shouldn't take much to get it looking like the rest of the fleet. The top speed on theselocomotives was about 20 mph. Now I have something to drag race with my shays. With detailing to meet or exceed earlier efforts of Atlas with the S2, this new model from Bachmann also features Tsunami sound. All in a package with a most reasonable price. Brought out in 1950, the S4 was the next step in Alco's development of the small switcher, and this engine is no exception. Straight out of the box, all I had to do was dial up short address 3, and it ran beautifully! Later, once the thrill had died down, I changed the long address to 146 and started pushing cars around. Performance was acceptable, pushing a dozen cars at a time around the yard. Compared to the previous Atlas engines, these are lighter, and cant handle as much as the Atlas S2's, BUT then again, the Atlas engine dont have that amazing sound either. Value wise, I couln't be happier. Great detailing, DCC and Tsunami sound. Considering I paid less for this engine than I paid for any of my Atlas engines without DCC 10 and 15 years ago, the price was amazing. Suggested retail is $159.95 but the can be found for less. Go ahead get 1, or 2, or 4! You wont regret it!! Dunphy's Ice Co. Just a DH-123 since I intend to install a Tsunami eventually, so a basic 2 function is good enough for testing. Nice big brass model quality box, and the usual plastic inner sleeve. The rear ladders and the bell are in a small parts bag inside the sleeve. There are four phillips head screws on the bottom between the forward and rear truck pairs. Remove these and the shell comes off. Do it gently, as the detail parts are press fit and you can knock them loose if you get ham handed. The light package leaves much to be desired. The lights are dim. I will discard the factory light boards when I do the sound install. The factory board is equipped with the customary socket for the 8 pin plug and the 9 pin JST harness with dummy plug. I always pick the 9 pin when using these boards. YMMV. I had a dickens of a time getting the shell back on. After a few aborted tries and some cussing, I figured out that the front blower housing had split apart slightly and was fouling one of the metal screens in the shell. The metal screen didn't pop off though it should have. I think the detail assembly quality is getting better. I managed this install as well as the Genesis GP-9 decoder installs without breaking anything! With the shell back on I attached the bell. This is a metal part going into the metal chassis. ACC is necessary. The rear ladders are press fit items, as are the front ones. You could glue them, but I don't recommend it. I knocked one off twice during handling. The running gear swings wide and can catch on them and pull them off. Look out for this when handling the model. The motor was a little noisy on DC, and quieted right down once the decoder was installed. I intend to test it at the club tonight and will follow up with those impressions, pulling power, and maybe a photo or two if I remember the camera There is no minimum radius information on the box or the instruction sheet. I would not try less than a 30" minimum radius with this big honker, but for you adventerous types who insist on forcing the big stuff around 18 and 22" radius curves, you will want to watch the bell and those rear ladders. They might foul the running gear. The model is equipped with knuckle spring McHenry couplers. I removed these and replaced them with Kadee Whisker Springs. I use the standard head, not the smaller one, as I am an operator first. The 158's smaller knuckles look nice, but on long cars and locos they can be very sensitive to elevation changes, and are not very forgiving of less than perfectly correct coupler heights. In a club environment, less hassle is better! Nice model for the bucks. I have heard one with the Tsunami installed, and I have to tell you, the U50 begs for sound. If you can't afford a pair, they can be paired with anything bloody nose, or even F's. I've seen lots of prototype photos with cabless DD-35's. GP-35's would work or maybe a tunnel motor. Enjoy! This list can be sorted on any 3 of the 44 data files. Click on an item and the details are shown in the Detail Area on the right. You can Show/Hide each data field and change the field title all by category. Six data fields are for your special needs. A picture can be attached to each item. There are 25 Reference Tables that are attached to some of the fields. Click on an entry and it is inserted onto the record instead of typing. You can add/delete any entry. MiTrains can produce car cards (with or without pictures) for the Car Card/Waybill operating method. You can also create custom reports. MiTrains comes with a data base of all N scale Micro-Trains cars and a second one for HO Accurail cars. If you already have your engines and cars in a speadsheet like Excel, you can re-arrange the colunms to suit MiTrains and import the data directly into MiTrains. No need to retype everything. The Waybills program creates and prints the 1 to 4 cycle waybills that fit into the car card. You need to add your "home" (the ones actually on your layout) industries. There are some 40,000 US and Canada protype (or Off Line) industries included. The waybills title line can be an industrial location or town name to help operators to route the cars to their destination. The title line can be colored by destination as shown in the sample picture. Once a waybill is printed it is flag so it will not print again. So, it you add or change a waybill, only those will print. (You can always override the flag.) Once you add your home industries, nearly all filling out of a waybill is done by mouse clicks. Both programs can be downloaded for a free 30 day unrestricted trial period. Both programs come with Tutorials that step you through the basic functions. All upgrades are free. Pros - Unit has two LED' one lights up when the DCC side is connected and the other lights up when the PC is connected. Lenz DCC has a 'server' concept that will allow for TWO LI-USB connected to the SAME DCC system. This means two computer programs can talk to the DCC system at the same time, example JMRI for decoder programing and Railroad & CO for train operations. The advent of the WIThrottle for an Iphone IPad ITouch allows one to have a dual remote wireless throttle for about 10 bucks. (not counting the cost of the LIUSB). CONS - NCE Pro Cab comes with computer control and Digitrax USB is 1/2 the cost of this unit. Getting driver have always been problematic and the 64bit ones were really hard to find. These units are sensitive at the driver level for the level of code in the DCC station. By Efram My roomate just bought a pair of Rapido's RTR LRC cars. These represent the first run of LRCs delivered to VIA. The good- The kit has no visible casting lines, and it very well executed. There is a gap where the ends are placed into the one-piece shell, but it's far from an eyesore. It has all the characteristic lines and details that you'd expect from Rapido. The separately-applied details are SUPERB, including revised (and now scale) stirrups steps, HEP cabling and all grabs. The PA system speakers and AC vents are an improvement over the bulky, etched items that came with the kits. The paint is fairly well applied. It does seem to be a little thick around some details and corners. All logos and technical data are crisp, looking on par with Rapido's past releases. The window tinting is nicely done. It appears to have been left a little light, to show off the nicely-executed interior. The doors have their windows tinted, which isn't actually prototypical. The diaphragms come in a separate baggy, as do extended-length couplers. I'm assuming these will allow the cars to operate on tight-radii curves. The car also comes with a wand, to actuate the interior lights. The bad- The trucks are, right out of the box, a HUGE bone of contention for even the least discriminating modeler. The car rides too high, by at least a scale 6". The trucks have only enough "free-rolling action" to glide about 3-4cm. It's no better, (and in fact, a bit worse,) than the trucks that came with the kits, and NOT on par with Rapido's usual quality control. The ugly- I think that the gray and yellow are both wrong, for 2 reasons. 1) It doesn't match what Rapido recommended for their kits. 2) My eye, and photos, tell this reviewer it's incorrect. The blue seems to be a perfect match. The large VIA logo, adjacent to the door appears to be almost translucent. To the reviewer, it came across as "blurred" but in reality the yellow just isn't bright enough. (I know this doesn't come across in the photos.) The Rapido LRC car fills a void for so many Canadian modelers. If the modeler takes it upon themselves to fix the ride height issue, along with the easy task of applying a proper VIA logo decals over the stock one, this car will look the part, especially for ~$60 CAD!? (In case you can't sense the hint of bitterness in my writing, just ask anyone who, (like me) payed $115 for the kits that required 8-10 hrs of work... Need I say more?) Looking for a way to expand the capacity and the longevity of its coal car fleet, this program took in old hoppers, stripped them to the frame, and built an entirely new gondola body on top of that frame. With production starting in July of 1992, spanning multiple classes with multiple variations, NS' Roanoke East End Shops churned out over 18,000 of these cars, ending production in 1998. With almost 3,265 of class G-85R, G-86R and G-88R’s in service, this model represents one of NS' most recognizable freight cars. - The Models Our first freight car! We have been working hard on this model and look forward to delivering a first class scale model of this unique car. From day one, our 3D engineering models were accurately designed from blueprints and field measurements. Furthermore, literally thousands of photographs have been analyzed to ensure our printing is extremely accurate, with specific attention given to the car class. #14805 GP30 Highhood Bell Brackets (2) w/template - brass http://www.modelrailroadforums.com/reviewpost/showproduct.php/product/156/title/-2314805-gp30-highhood-bell-brackets282-29-w-2ftemplatebrass/cat/19 Fri, 29 May 2009 04:02:12 -0400

by: jbaakko

Description: Those Southern highhood GP30 nose bell brackets can be added to your models using these brass brackets. There are alot of add on details included in the box to talor your engine to the specific road that you model. The tender comes in 2 diffrent models as well to represent what was used on the specific railway model. Tender power pickup is taken off both trucks and fed to the front where the locos teather plugs in. Some of These engines are not DCC ready so you will have to check. To wire the loco with your own sound decoder was fairly easy if your good with taking things apart. I was able to wire the headlight, motor and power pickup in the loco in an hour. I also used the tenders power pickup but removed the stock plug and teather. The New teather will take the same route as the stock one so plan ahead with wireing if you do a draw bar mod mentiond below. The tender has spot to place a Soundtraxx 1" speaker with large baffel and it vents the noise out the bottom. The decoder and speaker have plenty of room in the larger tender. Some models also have a tender light that can easly be operated by DCC. Motor control is very good in this engine. Slow starts and high speed running with a load showed no signs of stress or slowing of the motor. this loco can pull about 30-35 free rolling cars on the flat and up any 1-2% grade. it manages 18" radius and Number 4 turnouts with ease. The bad: The wheel flange on all the wheels are too deep like all IHC models. they wil run fine on Code 100 and 80 but anything less than that and they will ride up on the ties, spikes etc... the good is that you can paint the very edge of the metal wheel where it meets the plastic face and hide some of the flange thickness. The cross head and side rod details are cheep and were made just so you can see things swinging around. The cross head does not resemble a prototypes at all. the tender trucks and wheels also have large flanges. Again you can paint the wheel face to hide some the large metal surface seen behind the trucks. the tender drawbar is long to operate on 18" track but I found that cutting a new hole in the draw bar just behind the stock one looks better. If you do modify the draw bar you may have to shave off a little of the tender corners to get it around 18" radius without making contact with the locos lower rear cab walls. over all I would say that this IHC line is slightly under spectrum in the detail department but motor control is better and stronger. its a great deal for a nice looking engine that does not break the bank. General comments: Like all offerings from Bowser, the kit is divided into steps, with the parts for each step in individual bags. This, I like as you don’t have to worry about using a screw or a similar looking part in an incorrect place. The boiler and tender have all the holes predrilled, minus a few exceptions, mainly the handrails for the tender and cab, and the uncoupler bars for the pilot and tender. This definitely removes some of the headache involved with the assembly of such a locomotive. You don’t have to come up with a surface gauge and plate to be able to mount the running boards or the handrails straight. The holes are already there. Now I’ll discuss what I find “lacking” in the Mechanism, Tender, and Boiler. Mechanism: Bowser does make a few compromises with the mechanism that I personally find distracting from the kit. Remember this is just my opinion. First, the side rods are only articulated into two pieces per side. A much smoother running loco could have been achieved if each side rod had of consisted of 4 rod pieces instead of two. A fully articulated rod system has been a hallmark of smooth running brass steamers for years, and as such should have been included here. I will order additional side rods from Bowser soon to include this feature on my model. Second, the Southern Railroad type valve gear is represented by only two single short pieces of valve linkage. These were, in effect, double links on the prototype, forming a “Y” type linkage on the inside and outside of the valve gear hangers. It would not have been difficult for Bowser to include 2 extra parts per side to accomplish this effect more correctly. The motor included with this particular model is the regular Bowser 5-pole, open frame motor. Testing with an ammeter showed that it will run at 12 volts with a rating of .48 amps at no-load. However, the stalling current was a humongous 1.99 amps, which, except for some O and G gauge decoders, would fry a regular decoder. Since I had access to some other gearboxes and can motors, I machined the gear slots in the frame out enough to fit the gearbox and I installed a can motor. The loco now runs very, very smooth and is fairly quiet. After testing and breaking in, I’ll install its decoder. Now don’t get me wrong, these are not real shortcomings in the mechanism. You still get a very smooth running and powerful mechanism straight out of the box, but it could be even better than built as is. The appearance detail wise, would have been greatly improved as well. Tender: The only thing I can say about this is something just doesn’t look quite right. I believe it’s a USRA style tender, but not quite a true USRA. To me it looks more like a tender that was “USRA-ized”. Holes for the uncoupler bar and the handrails are not drilled, but the metal wasn’t hard enough to make this job difficult. The tender does have one “problem” as I see it. The shell is thick and it has a solid floor. I believe that just a “frame” instead of a solid floor would have lightened this weight some, which would have added to the pulling capability. This would have made the installation of a sound decoder easier as well. Boiler: This is where I have the biggest problem with the kit. Although the “front” half of the boiler definitely is USRA, and the top of the boiler's up to the cab, above the walkway looks OK the rest, the firebox, and cab area are something else entirely. For reasons unknown, Bowser decided to add a “step out” from the boiler into the firebox, at the level of the running board. Please see attached pix. They also chose to fill in the area underneath the cab, almost to the edge of said cab. The effect is over ½ the running board in this area, is supported by the firebox! This causes two things that distract greatly from an otherwise good model. First the firebox becomes much wider, giving the model what I call “the Wooten effect”, as seen on steamers that burned anthracite coal and second because of this, its impossible to drill holes through the running board to pass piping. The extra width causes the piping to come through at the outer edge of the running boards, and not tight against the boiler as it should. This forces the piping to be pieced here and unless you’re extra careful, the piping will not appear to be one piece. This piecing is exaggerated by the offset formed by the widened firebox. Viewed directly from the side, its not very discernible, but how often do you see a locomotive directly from the side when it’s moving? My hope is paint will disguise much of this. The solid area underneath the cab creates another problem. The injectors, which should be mounted underneath the cab, now stick out on the outside, which precludes the control rods from being able to come up through the floor of the cab. Lastly for some reason, Bowser also chose NOT to include the windows for the front of the cab. What I mean is the openings have not even been cut thru the front of the cab wall, nor is the "trim" normally seen around the windows are there at all! Its just a blank "wall". This does distract greatly from its appearance. Cutting these windows out almost demands, due to the wall's thickness, to be cut out with a milling machine. Unfortunately, not many modelers I know have access to the type of milling machine needed to do this properly. I know that I don't and would not recommend that it be tried freehand. I looked at the possibility of removing the “fill in”, under the cab as well, and it can be done much easier, with a steel cutter in a Dremel tool, but this will be a later project. Conclusions: Overall my opinion of the model is to give it a D in appearance, but an A+ for power and smoothness. If Bowser would correct the “problems” with the boiler on future releases, most of what I see as the shortcomings would disappear. You may be able to find a replacement boiler from a old brass or plastic junker, as I believe that a rebuild using 2 USRA Mike boilers from Cary as such, is more work than the results would warrant. As built, the loco comes out as a very powerful and smooth running engine. Its well balanced and has required very little of the tweaking that some steam kits require. I did put a single coat of my “loco black” (a mixture that is not quite black, but not gray either. Makes for better pictures and you don't loose the detail on the engine), and the paint does make some of the boiler shortcomings almost disappear. When I completely finish the painting and decaling I’ll post better pix. Addendum. I have not posted a price as this will vary greatly, depending on where it has been purchased. The basic kit lists for$146.05 and the superdetail kit lists for $64.40. I acquired both off of E-bay for $75.00 total.
