Default 1st sound decoder install!

Hey guys, I am about to attempt my first sountraxx sound decoder install into the shell of an Atlas GP39-2. Any tips on how to properly do this without frying my new $90 board? haha

Follow the number one rule: totally isolate the motor from everything. If if a wire (or wires) shouldn't touch, then don't allow it. Remember, Kapton tape is your friend!

Use a speaker box to get optimum sound out of it. Make sure the back of the box is closed securely and only the front of the speaker is exposed.

Is this your first DCC decoder install, or just the first sound install?

Sound is a lot harder just because of the speaker. Since this is one of the Trainman series I presume there aren't any built in places to put the speakers like the Master series have. Do you already have the speakers or a plan of where to put the speaker?

Well I have the speakers and I ordered em with the enclosures already. This is my first DCC install of any kind. I think the best place to put the speaker is in the rear of the long hood like most have done. Would these Trainman loco's have the motor completely issolated already? I guess the best way to tell is by taking it out and seeing if anything touches...

If I put the speaker up in the top rear of the long hood should it be facing upwards or downwards for best sound. I have already detailed these units and had them custom painted before thinking about doing this so no open fan grills on the rear...

OK, I have the decoder in and soldered even the right way! Power to the board, light is on, and loco moves back and forth. I am thinking I am gonna wire the lighting next. This unit has front and rear LED headlights and also ditch lights. Can I use function 5 on the board for both ditch lights??

OK, well I successfully got my first decoder all rigged up. It actualy wasnt bad at all. Just a lil patience and I wish I had a better soldering iron. Might have to get me a new one tomorrow. The speakers I ordered are to long so gonna have to order some shorter ones, but I did get the sound working. I am pretty well satisfied that I can now confidently do a pretty easy sound/light decoder install!!

Since the Atlas GP39-2 doe not have see-thru fans, your best bet is to have the speaker firing down towards the truck. If you had it firing up, the shell can muffle the sound.

As far as isolating the motor, Atlas motors are already isolated, and Atlas does not use the frame for pickup.

OK sounds good. Is there any "normal" size speaker for a geep to mount in the rear of the long hood? I also just found out about this JMRI interface thing. This looks really cool. I am gonna order one of those NCE USB deals so I can program em right from my computer. Tomorrow night I have a GP60M and a 8-40CW to install sound in
