Default pencil manufacturers

anyone know of a pencil manufacturer that gets rail service? my guess the raw material would be wood and graphite.

I don't know if this page is reliable, but it might be a place to start.

They would also need dyes for colored pencils and paint for the outer coating. Possibly eraser material and the brass ring that holds the eraser to the pencil. And cardboard boxes for packaging.

Interesting idea.

If we're modeling the present day, I think we have to push reality a little to get all these factories with their loading docks where they get a carload of this or that. Have the Ace Pencil Co on your layout if you want it! And if you feel like it, let Ace receive tank cars filled with yellow paint, too. And actually graphite is mixed with clay in pencils, so the manufacturer would receive both, though maybe the mixing is done by the supplier. What form would the stuff come in then, one wonders.

Oh, and erasers! They'd want those too.

Judging by a quick survey of the ones in the list with full US addresses they appear to be near tracks but don't have spurs run to the building.

So the US doesn't have any steel mills left, but it does have pencil manufacturers. There's a moral in there somewhere, maybe something about too many pencil-pushers No steel, no tracks?

That is truly great! I guess I just don't know how to put thought into a layout because my only industry is a pig farm! Well, ok, the farm is going to have field corn as well but still... how do you guys come up with these industry ideas???? oh yeah, the real world lol

I think pencils would be difficult to model in 1:87.1 scale. You could do the crates and such, and maybe a big 87x sized pencil sign on the building (use a pencil ...).

But if I was going for fun industries I might do a toilet manufacturer, or something along those lines.
