A few years back I ran across an undec Athearn SDP-40, and just bought it. Still sitting in the box. Whether I turn it into a CNJ GP40P, don't know or not, but at least I have it, when I need it.

Have you got a layout at this point? Between your CNJ wide cab, and a few other of your projects, I'd be interested to see where you run your efforts. At some point, I may do a E60CF in the last Reading scheme.

Keep up the good work!

Now you need to make the operating brake lights on the side of the cab, lol.

From what I read the Blue light means the Handbrake is on, the White light means cab signals on and operational, and the Green light which is off means the brakes are released.

The MBTA has something similar on their coaches. Blue = handbrake on, Red = air brakes applied, Green = brakes released. Whether the indicator lights are working..... is a different story

I would say most if not all passenger equipment from Amtrak and Commuter RR's has these but this is the first time I have seen it on a loco! Now I have to figure out how to make operating ones, at least I recently figured how to make operating APU lights on locos but these would be neat! LOL

I've seriously thought about doing it. I think using fiber optic stands would be best way. The housing would have to be custom made, have 3 holes drilled on both sides like above in the pics, then have 3 individual holes on the mounting side. Now I would take 3 small strands of fiber optic insert in each hole then take 3 seperate strands and put them in the hole on the mounting side, kinda like forming a T. Those 3 stands would be worked into the long hood and have micro leds for them. If I do any sound for this its going to need 2 decoders, one for the 645 prime mover/heads f&r/ditch lights. Second decoder would be for the strobes front and rear, HEP generator if there is one that sounds close enough and then for the brake indicator lights.

But this is all down the road. I still haven't received any more of my cannon parts like the cab, all the side doors i'll need for the HEP compartment, plano radiator hatch's. I did get a bluebox gp40 and gp38 off ebay that someone had already started to detail. Its a shame they are getting hacked lol

I have tried the T thing with fiber optic and it didnt work, I was going to install operating lights on Walthers Superliner cars. Even with super bright LEDs you couldnt tell the lights were on. I will come up with something eventually but I have a lot of other things to finish first, LOL. I have an idea but havent tested it yet.

I will most likely try using 0402 size SMD LEDs. I typically use 0603 SMD LEDs for various projects like Ditchlights and headlights so the smaller 0402's might work in this situation.

Here is a pic showing the LED sizes. smallest is 0402 then 0603, 0805, 1206.

and some 0402's I found on Ebay.
