I was bored out of my chair today. It has been really warm and humid so I have just sort of flopped round.
I figured I would mess around with my $8.00 girders. I cut them free, filed, sanded and glued them all up. Primed and applied just enough color to sort of cover it. I used a rust/red primer to see if I could sort get the rusted through effect. This is with just a rattle can and not an air brush. I still have to put more rusted effects on, dull cote, chalks, layers and more layers, but trying to decide if I like it. I may have to wait until I get finished with it to decide. Buzz. |

Hi, Can you take another pic? It seems to have glare on the girders. Have you considered just applying very thin coats of paint with a brush first then layers of chalk? You'd be surprised by the outcome. Here is an example of a car painted by brush in thin coats of paint and weathered slightly by chalk. |

DOH. Forgot to say I misted it with silver spray paint. I am trying to get a rusted through look. There is a bridge I have driven past for 30 plus years and it is an old and rusted. It was at one time silver but has been weather beaten and that is the look I am after.
As I look at the picture again, the glare is the silver color. I have to dig out my rust colors and chalks and see if I add a few more layers, what happens. Buzz. |

Well I was able to get about 10 minutes with my box of chalk, small brush and a can of Testors dull coat. I think it looks a little better. I still need more chalk and some lighter dusty colors to fade the over all effect.
Here are a before and after chalk. Buzz. |
