If you mean most inexpensive, I believe the Bachmann EZ-Command is about as basic and as inexpensive as you can get.

This system, although great at what it can do, has many limitations to it that limits its versatility. The greatest limitation I see is it can't program individual CV's except a starting voltage or any address above 2 digit address.

For around $150 you can get an NCE PowerCab. Much better system, expandable, and works great.

NCE just announced this new DCC controller, the DCC Twin, at the NMRA Convention:

http://db.tt/1lrJU9Qz

Description:
"DCC Twin. Allows users to operate two trains at once. Includes power supply. Features expansion port to add extra walkaround throttles, computer control, and automation devices. $149.95."

I don't believe it is available for purchase yet, but at that price it looks interesting.

I do not really know who has the cheapest out there or if I would want to go with that. I have the older Prodigy Advance. It has served me well for the little time I have run it. I do think I have used it more in the last two months then I have in the last 10 years

Here is the newer version.

Bachmann's EZ Command system.

Bachmann has their upper end DCC. It seems to be fully loaded compared to their EZ command basic system. I have watched a few YT videos on it.

Buzz.

I wonder why? It appears to be less of a unit than a Powercab, for about the same $$$

A Powercab can run 2 at a time,,Procab 6!

I have since learned that the NCE DCC Twin will have a street price around $120, which might make it attractive as an entry level DCC controller.

In the NCEDCC discussion group, it is reported that the Twin work with AIU (which the Power Cab and NCE USB adapter won't do) and will support external cabs.

But there isn't enough information yet to decide if the Twin is anything but a "train set" type controller.

By the way, I have a Power Cab and love it.

Doesn't look like it will do any programming though.

Brooklyn Locomotive Works sells the Power Cab set up for $139.95 and its great I have one. I recently expanded to the SB3A smart booster and an extra throttle. I also have their USB computer interface to use JMRI and its slick.
