paper mill layout

Ok guys, i finally got lucky and picked up the boiler house, kraft mill and warehouse, i couldnt find any of the structures other then the boiler house, but recently got lucky at a hobby shop

Right now my layout is about 18x10 and i have about a 2x10 foot section for the paper mill in ho scale. Yes i know this is tiny, but i can add on to my layout if need be to make the industry fit nice. Part of the area where i want to put the mill is on a table that i was planning on putting a scenic divider down the middle of a 5x10 table, i could use both sides if i have to or just add more benchwork so i can get it all to fit nice.

Basically im just looking for some advice from other paper mill modelers. I know rico has or did a paper mill scene on his layout which looks awesome. I hope you see this rico, just looking for some pointers, I believe you redid your paper mill complex just wondering why.

I seen some great looking layouts online that have paper mills, and i just hope i can layout the track work correctly.

I laid mine a bit awkwardly, but I think it will be good operationally. Mine is N scale, and the layout will be too deep for HO, but it's attached. It's 30" deep at the thickest point. I'm kitbashing the main mill to have 2 tracks instead of one as well as move truck loading to the side. The third building isn't available in N scale. I also plan to add another building on the short spur that will be a shop or powerhouse. If it were straightened out, it would be roughly 8' long (again, in N scale) but that's with the extra yard that was found on my prototype. If I were in your position, I would try to design it to be more linear with the buildings not all clustered at one end, and have the yard (or just a couple of storage tracks) behind or in front of it.

Matt that's a very nice mill plan, lots of switching!
Joe what buildings do you have so far? Mills get a wide variety of frieghtcars so plan with that in mind. A 2X10 area is plenty of space, especially if you split the buildings and place them against the backdrop.
My layout had to come down to reinsulate the walls, I am just drawing up my next mill now mainly based on the Walthers papermill series.

I'll keep you posted as I go, maybe I'll get around to starting a papermill group as we discussed earlier...

That might be why nobody models a sewerage treatment plant.

Well, growing up in a mill town, you get the smells of the processes of the items such as cotton, paper, iron, among other things. Believe it or not, the smell of the cotton fibers were the worst.
The major mills here got their power from their own water driven generators on the river. And, of course, they used the river as their own disposal.
Luckily (?), all of them are gone now, and it has taken decades to clean and recover the water and land. They have left behind a legacy of lost jobs and destructive practices for the following generations to fix.
