Good morning in the new place. Rain will be moving in shortly, so I guess I'll drive the truck to work today.
My cat hasn't been acting its normal in the last couple days. Not eating as much as he normally does. lays around more. He's a feral cat and keeps his distance for the most part. Stays outside all the time.
Yeah, his eyes glow like that all the time.

Good morning. Wet and mild here in central MD.

My post on page 100 of the old place can be viewed here: http://www.modelrailroadforums.com/forum/showthread.php?40098-Running-Bear-s-Coffee-Shop-LXIII&p=449106#post449106

I'm not entirely sure what you are calling a "window-mounted heat pump"? Are you are referring to a window a/c unit ?
If you have an outlet for the drain -- try getting a dehumidifier. ...

Sherrell - it looks like an A/C window unit on steroids, but functions as a heater in the winter and an A/C in the summer. As for the dehumidifier, I haven't had any problem with humidity [or the lack thereof] in the 4 years since I built my layout, so I'm going to hold off on that for now. [Nowadays I'm using it for heat, so water drainage isn't a problem.]

Good Morning All. 67° and raining. It started about 45 minutes ago. Weather forecasters say to expect thundershowers around noon??? My back porch weather report is always more accurate! Had a great Easter egg hunt at my brothers house yesterday. There were 40 of us. The rules have changed a bit. The eggs for all those over 55yo are now restricted to being hidden between waist and shoulder height. Whew! Also the restriction on "no cocktails until you find your egg" was lifted. Of course I have been ignoring that one for years...my prerogative as the family patriarch! Sorta like raising the speed limit to reflect what everyone is really doing anyway. Headed for a funeral later today in Dallas. An old grade school buddy passed away last week. It will be crowded as he was the third-born in a family with 13 children. Interesting situation growing up in a four bedroom house...there was a boys bedroom and a girls bedroom with four apiece. The rest shared a mixed bedroom until an older sibling of their sex moved out and there was room in one of those rooms. All 13 shared one bathroom though.
Didn't really have a lot of time in the train shed after I got home, so I just piddled around and tried to straighten some stuff out.

Curt - Good news about the SIL. Good advice on the probiotics also.
Chet - Just go for it and quit thinking about it! I didn't need those 4 SD40-2's that I pre-ordered a few weeks ago, but sometimes impulse buying is just fun. After all, variety is the spice of life!
William - Welcome back to the Coffee Shop. We have missed you. Thanks for the wonderful Easter message. And don't mind Beady, he's just an old curmudgeon. Just stay off his lawn!
Eric - Sounds like a good place. I just wondered where the layout space came from. The bridge looks real good. Ah! The extra parts. LOL
Ken in Md - My wife doesn't understand the concept either. It is easier (and less expensive) to maintain heat/cool than it is to force instant changes!
Terry - Dang, you had to get up really early to open up this morning. Thanks.

Everybody have a great day.

Good morning everyone. 63 and raining, off-and-on rain and storms all day. I need a big cup of coffee and a couple of sourdough doughnuts, please.

Great weekend crammed with lots of stuff, including many hours in the train room. MOH spent many hours in the kitchen fixing a big Easter dinner for the family. Yesterday our granddaughter was dedicated at church, then everyone came over for lunch - 11 of us, including our kids and families, visiting in-laws from NY, and a family friend. Granddaughters had their annual egg hunt - the 7-month-old's first hunt!!

Made significant progress on the layout, wiring my first two TO's for remote operation, adding several sections of roadbed and track, and doing some landscaping. Got to get back to putting structure kits together - the town looks more like a "ghost town" right now.

I remembered Dave's posting of the NP and GNR time tables last week. I bought a N Y Central timetable at a recent train show, and thought I'd post that today. 1946 is before the era that I'm modeling (late 50's to early 60's), but the reason I bought it was the headline on the open page - - -

I'm something of a WWII buff - read everything I can get my hands on about the war - and to see that advertisement about "first post-war vacation" was interesting.

Anyway, I'll see ya later. Have a good day everyone.

All - Forgot to ask in my earlier post: in HO scale, what is the optimal distance you use between track centerlines on parallel tracks? In researching, I find that 2" (51 mm) is minimum for straight sections of parallel track, and slightly wider (2 1/4" or about 57mm) for curves. That seems to be something close to NMRA standards, but just wondering what the consensus is out there on this forum?

I do understand that to a degree the distance depends on engine and car size. I don't run anything larger than 60-footers, so I don't need really wide curves.

Thanks.

Good morning to all. 41 degrees to start off the day. Should make it into the high 50's by afternoon.

Eric - Nice to have you back posting. Sounds like you have a nice place where you are. Again, the bridge is a nice looking and a flat black would probably be the best color for it.

Johnny - I'm also a WWII buff and also read a lot about it. My father was in the Navy and stationed at Pearl Harbor on Dec 7th, but was pn a cruiser escorting the carriers when the attack occurred. That hooked me. Followed the Pacific theater and also when I was in the Navy visited many site in Europe where some areas were still being rebuilt from the war. This was in the late 60's. Also like to follow what the railroad did here during the war to move troops and supplies heading to war.

Willie - I'm not going to part with $225 for the RDC. (so far) I am running out of room to store locomotives and rolling stock on the layout. I saw Karl's spring cleaning post yesterday and was tempted by the Great Northern box cars but did restrain myself.

I did get a bit of work done on the layout yesterday besides doing some outside work. I had few grade crossings that had to be completed and finally got started on them after not doing anything with them for ten or fifteen years, if not more. Now it is time to work on older parts of the layout that have been neglected and need upgrading. Nice to be that far along.

Later.

Chet - My dad did not see action before the war ended. My uncle (Dad's brother) was a medic in the ETO - he never liked to talk about his experiences, though. When we lived in Spain, we traveled throughout western Europe, and visited the huge cemetery in Ardennes (Belgium). I can still remember being overwhelmed with emotion realizing the sacrifice those guys made so countries like ours could be free. (I'd rather not say my feelings about what's been done with that freedom over the years.)

Johnny - I also visited that same cemetery in Belgium. Quite emotional. Just before I got out of the Navy we were home ported in Gaeta and we took a trip to visit the monastery at Monte Casino, about a 45 mile drive, which we bombed into rubble and it had been rebuilt. We made some good friends there. We were in civilian clothes and I was rather good with the Italian language by then and when they found out that we were American servicemen, we couldn't pay for anything. Couldn't pay for a meal, hotel room, drinks or anything. The people still remembered what the Americans did for them. I am still in touch with some of them. One family came over to the US on business a few years ago and stopped by to visit. We took them to both Yellowstone and Glacier park. They really enjoyed that.

I also visited Normandy which was another emotional visit. We did have time to travel through Europe bu both rail and car and there were still some places that had not completely rebuilt from the war. Even in London when we were there in 1967 there were still a lot of signs of war damage that had not been totally repaired.

Howdy ...

Yesterday, we went to Louisville and back for dinner. The family from Cincinnati came from the other direction so we could meet there. Nice dinner, but the distance to Louisville is 200 miles one way from here, and there were rain storms all of the way back.

Not a problem, really. All I ask is that you realize that there are people out here whose non-Christianity is as much a part of them as your Christianity is a part of you. If it's proper for you to proclaim in this forum that "He is risen!" then it's proper for me to respond in this forum with "Prove it!" or for a Muslim with "There is no god but Allah!" and so on.

This signature is intended to irritate people.
Dude! He is risen IS the basis of what Easter is, just like Merry Christmas IS the basis of Christ being born. Easter was yesterday in the USA as we all saw it and he responded..... appropriately. If this bothers you then we should adopt a closer on politics in this forum as well as these CHRISTIAN celebrations of which you are apart of!

Afternoon All,

Hope everyone is doing well. Had a very nice Easter supper with the family (those that weren't working). Daughter did make it for the coconut layer cake with jelly bean bird nests on the top (tradition since childhood). Today I finished painting and weathering the windows, doors, and wooden walls of the kit. I ordered a light that mounts on the wall above the front door. The sign in the picture is not attached. I am just trying to decide if I want to put it on the building.

Sherrel- Nice picture. Definitely a doable modeling scene or diorama.

Chet- Nice picture and modeling.

Ken- You should be sure to thank your "expert" neighbor! MOH misses part of the "it takes time" to change the temperature of something also.

Eric- You could also use a grimy black and a little rust where the "metal" pieces join together.

I hope everyone has a good night.

Followers of Oester, Eastre, Ashtoreth, Astarte and Ishtar might disagree with you.

...just like Merry Christmas IS the basis of Christ being born.
I think you got that backwards. Anyway, my personal belief is that we should reinstate Saturnalia and move Christmas to October where it belongs.

Easter was yesterday in the USA as we all saw it and he responded..... appropriately. If this bothers you then we should adopt a closer on politics in this forum as well as these CHRISTIAN celebrations of which you are apart of!
Wow. I seem to have struck a nerve.

Did you mean we should ban religion on this forum, as well as politics? The only reason I would be in favor of such a ban is that, as you demonstrate, followers of Christianity tend to become emotional whenever their primacy is challenged. Followers of other religions, not so much.

My own personal participation in these holidays has nothing to do with Christianity (although I do enjoy a lot of religious Christmas music). I "celebrate" simply because they are holidays, and my manner of celebrating follows the pagan practices, such as giving and receiving presents (I never did have much to do with eggs).

The simple historical truth is that the early Roman Catholic Church appropriated pre-existing religious holidays in an attempt to deny them to various non-Christian communities. This was only partially successful, as various pagan symbols and customs were incorporated by the common people, such as gift giving, the Christmas tree, yule log, Easter bunny and Easter eggs.

Take Easter. There is no Biblical reason why it is celebrated sometime between March 22 and April 25, depending on the first full moon after the equinox. Similarly, scholars feel that Jesus' birth (assuming Jesus actually lived) would more likely have been in autumn rather than early winter, due to shepherds camping out with their flocks.

Point being, Jesus is *not* the reason for the season(s). If someone is allowed to say on here that he is, then I should also be allowed to say on herethat he is not. If, however, you want to ban religious discussion the same as politics is banned, I have no real objection providing that means all religious discussion and not just non-Christian.
