Steve's SOCAL BNSF layout

Thanks for all of the comments and feedback.

Added some ground cover and details this weekend. I also painted the tunnel portals a concrete color and washed them to look dirty and weathered. Not a huge fan of the way these portals look so I'll probably swap them out eventually for a more modern concrete look. Haven't glued these two in yet just for that reason.

Still need to ballast the tracks, add more trees and details. I've also ordered some more scenery products that should help with a transition from the mountains.

Thanks
Steve

Looks good Steve, I kinda like the look of the portals.

Thanks, I'm still on the fence with them. I think they are intended to be wooden portals. If so I just don't know if they'll go with the era I'm modeling.

That's the good thing about this hobby, you can go with something and if you don't like it you can always swap it!

You must have painted the track since the last series, looks really nice. Everything is really coming together--great job!! lasm

Scott, Thanks for the feedback.

Lasm, track was painted a brown and some ballasting done.

Thanks again for the feedback everyone! I did a bit more scenery work around this end. I did the ballasting inside the tunnels and more along the mainlines. I also did the turnout and added more details and ground cover. Also been messing around with building placement on this end, there's not much room for larger buildings/industry.

Steve,

This is my first time in the N Scale part of the forums and I have to admit, I didn't realise your layout was N Scale - that makes it so much more impressive!

Thanks Tony, it's definitely a bigger strain on the eyes and fingers at times. I just like that I can do more in a smaller space. Next place I have hopefully has a full size basement I can dedicate to HO.

Steve,

Your point about eye strain and finger strain is mainly why I went with HO. With that being said though and seeing what can be achieved in N Scale, I am 'sort of' wondering if I shouldn't have done N Scale on the space I have. Perhaps the next time, although I am getting a small N Scale for under our christmas tree :)

Tony, I know why people would choose HO over N. It's a challenge at times trying to replace couplers or deal with small detail items. I just use glasses and tools or tweezers rather than try to grab them with my fingers. Even putting N cars on the track used to be frustrating at times, I bought one of those Kato tools for putting cars on the track - much easier!

Steve,
I to did not realize your layout was N scale and I've been following your posts for awhile now:rolleyes:
How many feet of track is that?
Very impressive work, you have created a masterpiece!

Looking very very nice in the tiny teenie scale.

Thanks Lynn!

That's a good question, I've never actually calculated my total track feet. I'll have to get back to you on that one.

Haven't done a lot lately do due to the holidays. I did jump out of sequence since I have some time off this weekend.

Started benchwork for the next expansion. This part will add four more tracks to the yard and then a runaround section in the foreground with industrial buildings, sidings etc separated by a partition/backdrop.

Also bought some materials for backdrops so I will probably start on that soon too for those hideous white garage walls!

I've also been playing around with scenery a bit. Got a few sections done here but still need to add more details. Going for that socal dry desert/cajon look....

Thanks Lynn, I think so too. I haven't secured it to the existing layout yet. Been scratching my head as to keep it where is or to move the entire yard sections to the left and add a couple islands or dogbones in the middle.

Decisions decisions!
