Size difference between dry cell and Alkaline?

Try putting the old battery back in the engine, and see if it fits. If it doesn't, look for something that has changed, like a contact or bracket that has moved out of position.

It didn't come with a battery, I just purchased it from Ebay.

Did you get the Battery from Aldi? I've found some of their battery sizes don't match the "norm".

The battery is installed now..there is a technique that was in the Greenberg's repair manual how it's done and it can only be installed this one way!

Not that I'm particularly into old Lionel stuff personally, but that's an interesting installation trick with the battery cover.

BTW, I didn't see it clearly stated in any other reply but alkaline batteries (as well as just about every other type we use today - Nickel-Cadmium, Lithium Ion, Lithium Polymer, etc), *are* dry cell batteries. Automotive lead-acid batteries are wet cells, containing a liquid sulphuric acid solution.
