Hey Bob,
For that very reason I have been contemplating buying a Lionel American Flyer set for my grandsons to play with. Many matchbox and Hot Wheels cars are S scale or very close as well.
I've put the idea on hold for now because we are planning to move, but should I have enough space I will pull the trigger on this.

1:64th (S scale) is pretty well served with model cars, some really good prototype and others more fantasy.
