Boris I will agree to disagree. I'm going by my own experience as a coach and high school substitute teacher and more so on what my daughter and niece, both educators are telling me.

Too many drug addicted and otherwise distracted parents in city schools are not helping.

Terry, I don't look at it as socialism. I see it as capitalism with a conscience.

Those words "capitalism with a conscience" are not my own, I got that from Saint/Pope John Paul the Great.

I thought the rest of the board was about trains. Too much good train stuff gets sucked down here into the coffee shop, depriving the rest of the board.

But, I love the Genoa. I would guess from the mid 1960s judging from the real brass domes and other detail parts. My first new locomotive was a Reno of the same generation. Before that I only had left over hand me downs. I was in 4th grade. Looked and looked for the railroad on Virginia maps and was never able to find it. Had I realized Reno and Truckee were cities I would probably had a much easier time of finding it.

Sherrel: Simple solution to the tree problem:............

Ask your neighbor to use his car, run into the tree and knock the tree down into the street, now call the county and tell then the tree is damaged, then sue your neighbor for not providing you with the proper instructions on how to operate his car.

Good morning. Starting off at 11 degrees and expected to get up to around 40 again.

Yesterday I went up flying for a while and did some touch and goes before flying down to Yellowstone park and back. It was just a beautiful day.

Curt - Hope the digits heal quickly. I did that once on our old solid surface range. It was replaced with a gas range when we remodeled the kitchen.

Garry
- Nice photos. The club in Livingston is open to the public on Saturday evenings from 7 to 9 PM and on Thursdays from 1 to 4 PM during the summer.

Louis
- You sure posted a bunch if really nice photos. Hard to pick a favorite out of them.

Ray - I'll have to check YouTube out when I'm trying to take a shell off. I have a couple of them that I have no clue how to remove the shell. Willie really likes Scale trains. Sure wish they had something available that I could use. Not much of a selection and nothing for the time period I am modeling.

Sherrel
- Too bad they didn't trim the tree before it dropped all of the seeds. As a solution, maybe you can hire a hit man to cut it down while you are out of town with the motor home.

Karl
- Really like the old Genoa steamer. I am guessing that it is for the Virginia & Truckee which I have ridden on a number of times.

I plan on running some train today. Every time I start heading down to the train room I get distracted with other projects.

Here's a rail picture for today.

WOW, CHET: You hit the jackpot with that photo! Sure hope that photographer got out of the way!

LOUIS, GARRY, KARL - You all are simply outdoing your self's with the pic this morning.

CHET, GREG ... Both of you have offered very thought out solutions to my delima.

I'm going to go downstairs and run my train around the circle of track (took the Xmas tree down) and lay on the floor watching it go R&R-de.

BTW, CHET -- I can now do loops and chandels without leaving the ground!

Interesting discussions going on - I love it.

Sherrel: It won't last much longer, as someone will be probably be offended. That's why we have so much ignorance in this world, no one really wants to hear another view.

Incidently, WE have a teachers strike in LA at this time. I am sure that it will add to the stupid and uninformed crowd!

That shows where the teachers priorities really are. On the railroad, we would sometimes go years without a contract or raise, but were mostly prevented from striking, as the provisions that had to be followed in the Railway Labor Act, took years to fulfill.

Almost time for me to go pick up my grandson at school, but before I go I want to relate some experiences I've had with teachers and kids.

When I was substitute teaching I had a teacher give me a lesson plan with work sheets. He said "don't bother giving this to jane doe, (I don't want to name names) she can't do the work" I said nothing and he left for the day. I gave out the work sheets, jane doe included. She sat alone in the back of the class, I sat down with her. She told me "I can't do this" I said "I think you can"

Her problem turned out to be she did not understand the vocabulary of geometry. Once I showed her the definitions of the terms in the back of her text book and we went over the terms used in the work sheet. She said "oh, maybe I can do this". I left her to it, but before I left I put a post it note in the glossary of her book. I wrote "don't let anyone tell you what you can and can't do. God made you and God does not make mistakes. We all have different strengths and weakness. We work harder to over come any weakness"

I could get away with saying that since it was a Catholic School.

Late that same school year she saw me in the hall way and ran to me saying "Mr. Lou, I got a B in geometry!"

That was an example of a shit teacher. Some kids need more attention. He had no excuse, his class had less than 20 students and only one was struggling. Many teachers today face classes of 40 or more and many or most of the students are struggling.

On another occasion I was in the teachers lounge. I was getting fed up listening to the teachers bad mouth the kids. Finally I had enough and when one teacher said "I don't know what these kids can do when they graduate?" I said "If all else fails they can always be teachers", silence followed as one by one they all got up and left, except for me.

In my experience I have seen good and bad coaches, teachers, mechanics, doctors, you name it. I have also seen and believe most professionals are good at what they do. Like anything else the bad ones stick out. I would hold teachers to a higher standard. I would also pay teachers more and make classes smaller. What do we get when we pay professionals with college degrees so little? We get some dedicated people who want to help kids and we get shit people who can't do anything else.

My nephew is another example. Harford county public schools wanted him on medication for ADHD or whatever they call it this week. My sister had to get professional help to fight them. She won, he has a masters degree in computer science and runs his own very successful company now.

Parents can make the difference. Parents have to make the difference, there is no other option. The problem is some parents are shit. From my many years of coaching youth when I see a bad kid, I will find a bad parent. I can over come a bad kid, but I never have more than 15 kids and I am really big and scary.

Another day I was a substitute, a student said to me "My father knows you and said I should not give you any trouble because you are crazy mean if anybody messes with you" I said "it's always good to listen to your father".

Many people think I am a great hitting coach, I'm not. I am good at getting kids to believe in themselves and giving them an environment that makes them feel safe and wanted on my baseball field. My number one rule for all my teams; be nice to each other or you sit on the bench with me.

The only reason I volunteered to substitute teach was so that everyone at school knew me. Nobody bothers my kids. Now it's time to go show my face at my grandsons' school.

Have a great day Everybody!

Good Day Gentlemen
Just an update to prove I AM making some progress in the train room. Got the benchwork pretty much done except the shelving underneath and I have track going down. In the 10x12 room I plan to have 2 around the room railroads, the outer one, simple with 26" radius curves for the grandkids and the inner one will be mine, which will serve a few industries. Still thinkin on the duckunder section. Swing down or lift out, not sure yet but it will come to me at 2;30 am some day soon. No grades on this layout and I am leaving an option for a staging area at the end of one wall. Shelf is 20" deep on opposite sides & 24" deep on the other 2. A 3x3 peninsula will be across from the doorway. The trainroom is in my 20x32 shop so I will have room to expand if I live long enough!!

Boris, I like to hear intelligent opposing points of view. That is how my opinions and ideas evolve. No body has a monopoly on all the answers, especially me! I could never imagine being offended by you or Willie.

I support the teachers strike in CA, from what I know of it at least. If you want the best people you have to pay the best salaries and they need smaller class sizes. We have to invest in our future.

I'm surprised to hear any union would agree to forgo the option to strike. I learned talking to my garbage men that our sanitation workers can't strike.

Dave, it seems like every job is like opening up a can of worms, but at least our layouts are a labor of love.

Beer is expensive enough these days, I can't imagine what a beer costs in a bar! Personally I'd much rather spend my money on my toys.

Speaking of spending money. I know, I had a self-imposed ban on spending until I get organized, but I found a loop hole. I do know what Christmas stuff I have and I know where I can use the other stuff!

Chet, this time I got lucky. I find, when searching for info anywhere, if not successful, change the way the question you're asking, is worded. In Y'tube's case, how the title of a video might be differently stated. The other thing that was very good about this guy's video, was that he not only got right to it (no messing around for half the video, taking it out of the box etc), he had taken a leaf from the TV Cooking shows and had one "that was prepared earlier".
