Good Morning: 61 degrees here at home. Ran into a snag yesterday and finally ready to leave this morning.

Glad to see Trussrod posting again. The somewhat cooler weather is nice, but reminds me that Winter is on the way again.
Chet - glad to hear that the RS-1 is behaving again. I enjoyed your "almost 100" car train - pretty cool.

Great to have you back, Justin!

Willie - having to watch the school bus being towed? You're just a kid at heart!

Good morning everyone. 64 and sunny here in SW MO. Should hit upper 80s today. Rain chances kick in Sunday and next week - we need it!

VA Ken - Very nice video(s).
Curt - Yeah, I've got to discipline myself to take photos of progress.

Had annual doctor visit yesterday. had the best health/medical report I've had in years. BP is under control, prostate okay, no heart issues, med dosages working, everything good. Then last night my knee acts up - I mangled it 45 years ago in a motorcycle accident, had surgery 20 years later but it didn't help, so I live with it - normally no problems but last evening it went berserk, could hardly walk, had to sleep sitting up; made it to work this morning but I'm hobbling. Will tough through it. Probably won't go downstairs to the train room today.

Trainroom last night (before the knee incident): Glued down the roadbed for the new siding, letting it dry overnight. Track goes in next. Hopefully over the weekend my knee will get good enough to where I can manage the stairs.

Have a good day everyone.

Good Morning All. 74° and clear. Temperature went all the way up to 99° yesterday, only due for 95° today. Record is 102° in 1965, average though is 89°. Humidity was only 32%, so there was no heat index to contend with. The postponed grocery/beer trek is today, with an additional stop at the Dollar General for cat food, they're running out of field mice I think. I wonder if they even notice that the cat food is shaped like little fishes and little hamburgers?
Trainwise yesterday, I lined up all of my tree-making stuff to begin that process today; plastic and metal armatures as well as some carefully selected pieces collected from local vegetation, several brands of pre-made trees that need enhancing and many different colors and textures of ground foam and netting. By the time that I got everything ready, I ran trains and drank beer instead. Just keeping priorities straight!

Chet - Your high temperature today in the 40's is going to be well below ours (see above)! I do hope that your area gets some much needed rain.
Eric - Some days are just like that, bored even in the train room. Fortunately I very rarely have a boring day. I do need motivation sometimes though.
Curt - Your follow-up on Jon and his pool screen damage reminded me at how amazed I was when I visited the Florida east coast years ago and saw all of the screened-in backyards. I understand why with all of the insects and things, but still a sight to see. I was out there for my company inspecting some of the wall-to-wall 16' and 20' sliding glass doors (another Florida spectacle) that we made here in Texas for customers in the Sunshine State. Cheap plug...Our company made many of these doors as we were just one of a few manufacturers that made doors that met the Florida Wind Load zoning requirements.
Sherrel -
Willie...You're just a kid at heart!
Better than being a corpse!!! Actually I do like to be aware of what is happening in the neighborhood, as sparse as it is!
Johnny - Time for a cane? Seriously spoken. I have one that I inherited from my grandfather (a shillelagh actually), that I occasionally use when walking when I have twisted an ankle or banged a knee. Actually hope that you are feeling better soon.

Everybody have a great and awesome Friday. Payday anyone?

Willie

Good morning. Starting off at 39 degrees with rain. Sure is nice to see that rain as it is probably the first decent rainfall we have seen in almost 2 months. The high for the day is supposed to only be in the mid 40's with a Winter Weather Advisory out until noon tomorrow. Some of the higher passes have had snow fall, but with the warm temps we have had, it is not accumulating on the driving surfaces. Hope this moist weather helps with the wild fires. Temps are forecast to be up into the 60's next week. Looks like summer is over up here.

Greg - We had some really heavy rains yesterday afternoon like I haven't seen in a long time. Weather forecasters have predicted over a half inch of rain across the western part of the state so I am hoping that the fire season may be on it's way out for the year. The parts have not arrived yet. I was coing through my hoard of detail parts and found that I do have some brass 5 chime Leslie horns along with MU hoses and lift rings for the top of the units. The Tru-Color paint is extremely close to the paint on the F-3 for the Lowey paint scheme. The side grills on the top side of the F-3 are painted silver from the factory, and like Garry mentioned, they are painted green on the prototype for the North Coast Limited.

Ken - Even though the video quality isn't the best, I still enjoy watching your videos.

Sherrel - Appreciate the comment on the video. Wish I could have recorder the longest train with the 97 cars, but the battery crapped out on the camcorder. I really suprised my self with that train. Had to do everything extremely slowly to get it moving, but one it got up to speed I let it make around 20 laps without any problems at all. Had one coupler problem with a clip holding the coupler on an old blue box car on a shorter train, but after repairs, everything went smoothly. Those Atlas locomotives I think are one of the best investment I made in the hobby. All runs so smoothly at all speeds and all of them run at almost the exact same speed. Who needs DCC to run multiple units.

I'll have to wait and see how the roads are over the pass tomorrow over to Livingston. I would like to see how the RS-1 runs but being that I still have summer tires on the car, I don't want to take any chances. Just checked the highway cameras on top of the pass and as of now it is only raining.

Here's my rail picture for the day.

Louis: After over 39 years in the shopping mall business, I know all about early Christmas Carols. They started weeks before Thanksgiving!!! And, it was my fault. By the second week of December I had the recordings on the system memorized and knew which carol was next. I had a speaker near my office door so we could enjoy the background music and I wanted to rip that speaker out from the ceiling by Christmas.

Chet: Hope you get more rain to handle the fires and not early snows.

Hope your RS-1 runs better after its repair trip back from Atlas. My guess is a new unit was shipped to you.

I have a couple DCC locomotives that give me some problems from time to time. My best runners are Atlas Milwaukee Road U Boats in a consist to haul ore trains. Locomotives are Atlas Classics and are maybe 12 years old and I installed DCC decoders in the units and I have not had a problem. The units are perfectly matched.

Waking up and then down to the trains.

Was just checking the weather radar and some of the road conditions around the state. The blue needless to say is snow. The photo os of MacDonald Pass west of Helena, MT taken earlier this morning.

I am in the BZN area on the radar, but most of the time the surrounding mountains block the radar. It is raining here.

Willie..was that CGI or PGT by any chance?

Gene - Neither, our parent company was MIWD and we made their doors in our Carrollton Texas plant, known as General Aluminum until shortly before I retired. Our competitor PGT makes a good product though. While I have heard of CGI, I do not know about the quality of their product.

Is there some sort of red-green lighting I could use as an indicator of whether or not a yard line is occupied?
I suppose something like a 2 color traffic light.
I've tried using a red-green bi-color LED stuck on the bumper but the red in the one I have is mighty dim compared to the green. Of course I could equalize them better if put appropriate resistors on each lead.
I seem to recall seeing some that were ground level which would be fine.
E.

Edit: It appears that I'm looking for a "ground level dwarf signal" shown at the bottom of this page:

$10 each- damm......

Howdy, everybody .

I posed both of my new GP7's for a photo. ... #251 has factory equipped sound. I am not operating 210 yet because it is DCC ready. I have ordered a sound decoder for it.

Afternoon All,

The grand kids spent the night last night. We found out at the last minute. I figured no modeling today but they were picked up right after lunch. Based on that I cut out the styrene sheet for the floor. I spent about an hour test fitting and modifying it around the track. I also painted and weathered the floor, but I haven't glued it down yet.

VA Ken- I liked the video. It reminded me of videos done in the 70's and 80's.

Chet- Ouch! Snow already.

Garry- Great looking Geep's. It looks like that they have a lot of details.

20170915_141327.jpg20170915_150835.jpg

I hope everyone has a good night.

CGI makes as good a product as PGT, maybe better. PGT bought CGI fairly recently. I just found out a few days ago that CGIs doors vand windows are made in Texas, don't know where exactly...hence my question.

Hello again, everybody ....

Curt .... Looks like a two stall roundhouse is your current project. Keep us posted.

Willie .... Evidently, you are about t make a forest. Have fun.

Ken D&J ... I enjoyed the video. I can tell you like intermodal trains.

Chet .... I never was able to get correct green paint for the NP Lowey scheme. I hope yours is a good match.

Speaking of projects, I am starting my corner project which will be the foreground of the bridge project I have been working on. I have many good ideas, but can not fit all of them in available space. The first part will be a second bridge over the mainline, and I am already working on that bridge. Most of the elevation will be about the same as track level of the new bridges, and I will be installing some track. There is much to be done for sure.

Here is how it looks now.

Good afternoon Spike Drivers and Ballast Tampers,
The weather is most definitely cooling off as earlier it was 70* earlier when I got up which a bit late, about 10:00 Am so it's a pleasant change from the heat which was getting real Old Fast!

Per WU [Weather Underground]
71 F, Feels like 71°. The high will be 77° with a low 57° tonight. A very welcome change especially in the night time temps as there were a couple of nights with temps around 85°! Welcome to Hell!!

Sunny, Wind 4mph WNW, Gusts up to 5.0 mph

Fall is definitely here as the Oaks are starting to shed their leaves as well as starting to drop acorns which is a sure sign of the wet weather and winter. Three days ago we had our first little rain of the season, I measured a whopping .02 of an inch! Hey, it's a start.

I've been feeling fairly well, my Left knee and leg seem to give me a bit of a fit at times, I thing it muscle problems but it seems to want too give out on me now and then but fortunately I'm able to catch myself so I don't fall but it a sharp pain for a moment. Maybe I should see the Chiropracter? Other than that and having a bit of a cough the Dr. said was due to allergies [What, I've never had allergies] I've been feeling fine.

As Sherrel mentioned earlier I've called him on occasion but not as of late as my cell phone battery died and the only place I can get one is from the Manufacturer or possibly from where I bought it in China. Without my cell phone I can't make any long distance calls or access the web with any speed. It's the a rusty Spike alright!

I also noticed that the Tarr weeds are growing profusly and producing little Yellow blossoms. fI hat the stuff, thank God I have my tractor fixed as I'll mow the junk down to keep it in check. Otherwise it spreads like crazy and produces stalks as large as 1/4" Dia. The interesting thing is most everything else is dying from lack of water and this stuff is sprouting like crazy! ?? The Mullen plants are also sprouting.

Afternoon All,

Did some chores inside today (thankfully) because it's a scorcher outside today. The heat index is 98 F with a clear sky and no breeze. I really feel for those still without power. I finally got hold of Jon today, he just got power back but his AC isn't working. He mainly had pool screen damage and a lot of debris in his yard.

I did a test of the bisque color today. It's really close and I did some weathering experiments on it. I took a picture but it just looks white whereas my eye can see the added color so no picture. I redid the pattern for the floor. This time I did it all in one piece, so tomorrow I hope to cut out the styrene I will actually be using. I also ordered all the things I need to make the facility. For the overhead lighting I plan on using copper tape instead of wire for most of it. I have seen several projects that have used this technique, and they have looked nice without all the wire for multiple lights.

CA Dave- I'm glad you're smart enough to find relief (that sounds bad but no insult is intended). Sounds like you are lucky having the casino so close.

I hope everyone has a good night.

Curt: Thanks, yes, I and a bunch of other locals would head over in the afternoon or early evening to beat the heat. Ironically, after being inside the Casino for a couple of hours you find yourself wonder out side to warm up a bit before heading back inside again. It's also great they offer free Pepsi, Lemonade and coffee.

I'm sure glad to hear you and Phil exscaped suffering any major damage. Some areas I saw on the news suffered major damage and loss of life I would imagine, not that I want that to be the case.

Good Morning: 61 degrees here at home. Ran into a snag yesterday and finally ready to leave this morning.

Glad to see Trussrod posting again.
The somewhat cooler weather is nice, but reminds me that Winter is on the way again.

Sherrel: Thanks, it does feel good to be posting again as does the cooler Fall weather. Heck if I keep checking in every couple of days I might become a regular again? As the weather cools off l'm sure I will. I still have plenty to do around the place though but I'll feel more like getting back to working on my layout with the cooler weather. It was way too hot before.

Good morning ...
David Trussrod .... Great to see you again !... Sounds like a bad fire, but it is good to know the railroad there is okay.

I worked on the layout yesterday. I am just beginning to fill a corner with track, structures, and scenery ... First step is a bridge I worked on yesterday.

Garry: Thanks, I appreciate your comment. It's also good to hear your doing more work on your layout. I'll get back on mine too shortly.

Good morning. Looks like fall is on its way up here. Started off at 51 degrees but the high may get up to only 60. Yesterday afternoon we finally got some showers. Had a few downpours with more rain and even the possibility of snow in the higher elevations. Tomorrows high is only expected to be in the mid 40's.

Trussrod - Was wondering how you were doing. It has been a while. We have been putting up with fires up here for a couple of months. Over a million acres have burned here in Montana alone.

Here's my rails picture for the day.

Chet: Thanks too for your concern, basically I feeling fine and all is well as the major fire that started at the Yosemite Mtn. Sugar Pine Railroad and quickly spread North toward Yosemite National Park was fairly well to the North of me by about 17 miles as the crow flys. Interestingly enough though, one evening about 9:00 when I was out front watering the grass I felt a blast of hot air that felt like it was about 115 degrees for about 5 seconds. Welcome to Hell!!

Good Morning again. A bit of a late start today. The local school bus broke down about 500' down the road and I headed down to be nosy! Stayed to watch the wrecker hook up and begin the journey back. A different bus driven by the principal came to get the kids and driver. Giving up on the fall garden this year. The current lack of rain is taking it's toll. No more than I have planted is not worth the effort to irrigate, as the adjoining ground just sucks the moisture away anyway. Not too much worry, as I preserved so much in the spring and early summer that I will have a surplus when things start producing next spring. My usual Thursday morning grocery/beer trip has been postponed until tomorrow since my wife wants to go but has a dental appointment this morning.
Out in the train shed, I planted the remaining stash of trees that I made recently. I have lots of material to make more, but that is my least favorite aspect of modeling. Hope that I remember to take pictures today.

David - Great to see that all is well. That's good news regarding the Yoemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad property. It's also good that you seem to be out of range. Too many of these fires seem to be caused by human intervention.

Everybody have a great day.

Willie

Willie: Thanks for your good thoughts. Yes fortunately everything in my area is ok. Yes it is good to know that the YMSP-RR property is Ok for the most part.

> An excerpt from the Fresno Bee [Fresno is a city approximately 57 miles South of the YMSPRR] and largest city in Central Calif.

The 1928 steam locomotive used to give most train rides, No. 10, was unharmed, along seven other passenger cars, two other locomotives, and the railroad’s buildings. It’s a relief to Blackwell, but he knows danger is still at their doorstep.

The following evening, on Wednesday, the wildfire burned an old locomotive that wasn’t being used, along with a passenger car, snowplow, side dump car and refrigerator car that were attached to it, and more than 200 wooden railroad ties.

Hopefully one of the other locomotives was an older wood cab Shay, I'm not sure of it's number.
In reading through the articles about the YMSPRR I learned that Max Stauffer, who's family owned and operated the Short Line passed away in 2008 which sadden me as I think I had met him when I offered to Oil the universal couplings and oil cups before a train ride which had me do before a train ride around 2003 I think it was?

I don't remember an old Refer on the property when I was there but they had an old stock car if I remember correctly but they could have acquired other equipment since my last visit as 2003 was quite awhile ago.
