Running Bear's Coffee Shop LXVII

Good morning, 62 and cloudy. Haven't been around much, all of a sudden summer is almost over and there is a bunch of summer stuff I wanted to do. It is going to be sporadic for me for a while so hope I don't miss too much

Willie, thanks for the hurricane update

Chet, always love the track photos

Sherrel, the F unit is always a favorite of mine

Tony, think I saw that you were back, Welcome!

Greg - As I mentioned to Jerry, I do usually run a lot slower, but had to step things up so trffic in the opposite direction could keep moving. They could use a better means of communications. As of now, you just holler at someone to throw a switch to keep traffic moving. As far as the scenery goes, they did a really nice job on it. I haven't asked anyone yet, but the backdrop is a very accurate depiction of the immediate area of Livingston. I am guessing that they had someone do the painting. I can pick out a number of landmarks in the backdrop. Sure did a nice job on it.

Sherrel - Glad we spurred your interest in the F units. I always liked the as they were what I saw at the head end of the North Coast Limited when we took out trips east. Even today, they are still really good looking locomotives. I was starting to make a list of what will be needed to detail the two locomotives. Both of the Stewarts I got on ebat are not numbered, so I guess I will be looking for some decals for that. Grab irons will be needed as well as fire cracker antennas, spark arrestors, winterization hatches, 5 chime horns to replace the two that come with them. I'll wait until they get here and give them a good once over and then find out exactly what I need.

Good Afternoon All,

The weekend went well. The grand kids actually behaved themselves both days:eek:. When my daughter picked them up Sunday evening she kind of implied that watching them for the weekend will be a frequent thing:(. Don't get me wrong, I love the boys and you help out family, but I also don't want to be child care every weekend either. I guess I will see what happens.

Garry- That is a nice looking passenger train. Your F units look great also.

Jerry- Nice looking cars.

Chet- Nice video and track photo.

Sherrel- You really should make them Pennsy F units! I saw your Frisco photo on my phone and I thought it was a Monon F unit before enlarging the picture.

I hope everyone has a good night.

Good afternoon.

Sherrel ..... I recall seeing Frisco F-units in St Louis when we went there t see family members.

Chet ....... My NP passenger F's by Steward still need details and unit numbers applied to them. .... Yet another Round Tuit.

Greg .... Thanks for commenting on my F-units

Curt .... Glad you were with the grandkids. I think I know what you mean about the younger generation having us do stuff for them. They think we are doing nothing because we re retired. ..... Thanks for commenting on my photo. My CB&Q F's are hauling a freight train . CB&Q used E-units instead of F units to haul passenger trains. The exceptions were three sets of F3's which originally were for passenger service, but were later changed to be freight units.

Everybody .... I mentioned we bought a boat. It was just in time for the eclipse family get together. Here it is tied up at the state park with family stuff onboard.

Curt -- My decals won't streach to spell Pennsylvania - besides, then I would have to add the radio "stuff".

Garry Nice looking rig! Do you fish too?

Garry

Nice party boat! My sister had one on the Huron River and Lake Huron when she lived in Bay City Mi. Lots of fun! ;)

Sherrel, Karl, and Terry ... Thanks for the responses.

Sherrel ... Fishing is easy; the dang Asian carp jump right into the boat ... LOL

Karl ... Good old Bay City, MI. ... There are many boats in MI.

Terry .... Who can forget Gilligan's Island ?

...

Weather guessers think the remnants of Hurricane Harvey could head in our direction. If so, it might be like remnants of Hurricane Katrina which went northward along the Mississippi River Valley until it got to the Ohio River Valley where it went eastward. I recall it was very stormy here then in our area, but of course not as bad as it was on the Gulf Coast.

Ugh! Don't even speak to me about the over-commercialized yearly draining of the wallets that the marking of the Savior's birth has become until turkey is on the oven! Them's fighting words around here!

Karl I think if anything related to Christmas can invoke such anger you may need anger management classes.

The opening and closing of ones wallet is strictly voluntary.

...

Hobby Lobby, the store that plays old Protestant Hymns in the store, already has decorated Christmas Trees, with the latest decorator themes of ornaments, crowding out the Fall and Thanksgiving items are already crowded out. Can Valentines and shamrocks be far behind?

I have four boxes of CDs collecting dust and taking up space,

We kept OnStar active in the wife's Caddie, because the wife liked the security blanket. Eventually, they were charging for services that our receiver was incapable of using, so I persuaded her that OnStar was like flushing money down the toilet. Once the introductory period is over, you can drop it. Personally, I prefer FORD's Sync which uses Bluetooth, and costs nothing monthly.

Hobby Lobby is a horse of another color.

I pay $24.99 a year for Amazon to store all of my music in their cloud. The app is free and I love it!

Leave it to Ford

Louis - There's Halloween stuff out at many stores here, even Christmas stuff at Hobby Lobby already.

It's never too soon for Christmas, right Karl? ;)

So, how much time do you spend in tunnels?

2-4 times a day, 3-6 days a week I drive through the Fort McHenry Tunnel (1.5 miles) or the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (1.45 miles) get stuck in either one and you will wish you had something other than satellite radio. Oddly enough I get cell service in both. That keeps my Wi-Fi hot sport working so that I can use my free Amazon Music player :)

The dominant religion gets to set the holiday customs. Nowadays that would be the Free Market Economy.

Amen :)

hello ladies and gents!! i have no idea what to do here so im gonna see if anyone is awake and all that. it looks like i have a lot of research to do to even begin to understand what the heck is going on here!

Don't feel bad, many of us have no clue.

Welcome, glad to have you onboard! :)

Just about anything goes except poly tics - people get anus over that!

That is not fake news!

Louis - Billion Dollar Babies is my favorite Alice Cooper album. Filled with great songs like "Elected", "Hello Hooray", "Billion Dollar Babies", "No More Mr. Nice Guy", "Unfinished Sweet"; all great songs. I liked the band much better when Alice Cooper was the bands name before it became the individuals name. An interesting sidenote to that album, "Hello Hooray" was originally recorded and released in 1968 by folk singer Judy Collins!
Willie

I agree! Billion Dollar Babies is my favorite cut, but all the ones you mentioned are good as well. I did not know that about Judy Collins.

Terry The fuel mileage on your truck in hard to beat. It may not get the rated economy yet, give her a few thousand miles though. She'll get there! !

I concur! My City Express is now getting 27MPG even with the AC running and it started out getting 23. It's rated at 24 City/25Hwy.

It'd be sort of silly to try it the other way around, wouldn't it?
.

If it did it would have to be some biblical heat!

I'm glad I could get in before the new Coffee shop opens.

Are there any clearance items?

Have a good night everybody!

I think there's a slightly used coffee urn they'd probably let go, cheap. Word on the street is Noah used it on the ark.

Hello all, welcome to Tuesday......the heat continues!
Kurt......thanks for the comment.....
Garry......nice looking watercraft, always did like those rigs, although what I have is a 12 1/2 ft aluminium jobber for the lake here.....
Sherrel.... I'm thinking you shouldn't have too much trouble dressing up your new F unit from the looks of the job you did on those stock cars in the contest thread........that is if it doesn't melt into one big pile of goo from the heat your having........

Two biggest things going on here on the left coast is the Chetco Bar fire @ over 117,000 acres with 2000 personnel, burning directly west of me on the Oregon coast. Upwards of 7 homes destroyed, and several level 3 evacuations (get out now!)
Meanwhile, streaming past the house is the annual migration to a meeting of the biggest gathering on the Nevada desert. A few of you should have guest it ......BURNING MAN..... a gathering of upwards of 60,000 people on the Black Rock desert playa. Initial tickets for this start at $425. Once your in, your in. If you leave the perimeter, your out. This playa is a dry lake bed encompassing more that 300,000 acres with a surface of fine silt that when the crust is broken, you have blowing dirt with the consistency of talcum powder. Attention you tech guru's.......check out the above post! Nope, I didn't type all of that stuff........

Good morning everyone. 61 and clear here in SW MO. No rain in forecast for at least 5 days - pity, 'cause we could use some. "Hey, Houston . . ."

Twelve for dinner last night. Poor wife was going berserk after a full day at the office and then preparing dinner - but it all turned out good. Had kids and their families, plus in-laws from NY who were in town for granddaughter's first birthday - got to show off the layout and run trains for them. Some had not seen the layout before - it's weird how they're amazed at the size and complexity (even of my smallish layout) because they expected an oval on the floor.

After some test runs last night I realize I have to do some under-the-table work - wiring! I haven't done anything for a half a year under the layout - been working above board all this time. Now it's caught up with me and the trains are stopping at several spots. Gotta post some photos soon.

Have a good day everyone.

Good Morning Guys. 67° and clear this morning. Still raining in Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana. It hasn't yet been as heavy as feared in most places, except in the area around Houston, which has received 24"-35". Galveston which is 50 miles south of Houston and is on the coast itself, has only had 11". Further east in Beaumont there has been about 18". There will be far more damage from flooding than from the wind that came with the initial impact over near Corpus Christi. There is a reason that geologists call those areas "flood plains". The city of Houston's lack of zoning clarity and other factors over the last 40 years allowed developers to do just about anything that they wanted; and many people are suffering now because of it. This is the third major flood that they have had since 2015. On a personal note, I have had to cancel a planned vacation in Port Aransas that I had scheduled for mid-October because while the condo I had booked is still standing, most of the rest of the town was destroyed. The portion of my deposit that is being refunded is being directed to the Red Cross. I certainly did not want to be in the way of salvage/recovery efforts.
Closer to home, I mowed and stacked firewood to keep busy yesterday. Noted a flat tire on my car, aired it up and it lasted less than ten hours. It was already my full-sized spare as my regular tire had an unrepairable puncture in July. I reluctantly put the donut spare on and will head out today to have them fixed. I do have an extra used tire to replace the original. Should have done this before now, but I rarely use that car since retirement. Pre-retirement = 500 mi/wk, post-retirement = 2000 mi/2 years.
In the train shed, I continued with the barbed wire fence. I strung all of the wires (like threading 87 needles), drilled 18 (out of 29) post holes and installed the first 10 posts into position. Should finish that today and get a picture or two. Ballasted another 18" of main line to break the monotony.

Chet - No problem with "high & dry" here, as the bands of rain never got this far north. The heavy stuff stayed at least 150 miles south. While people were warned, most did not leave. When they evacuated for Hurricane Rita (by then a tropical storm) in 2005, there were over 100 deaths in car accidents associated with the evacuation. Forty were the result of one bus accident. It was later determined to be unnecessary. Houston gets hit by rain and flooding all of the time, but many didn't realize the magnitude of this event and stayed behind like they usually do. It is not the only area with issues this time, but it's getting all of the publicity. There are still over 40,000 displaced Katrina refugees from New Orleans living in Houston according to the IRS statistics.
Sherrel - Be careful in that heat and stay hydrated. Get naked and run through your sprinklers with the dogs; in your backyard of course.
Dave - You're welcome. Do you have family or friends in that area?
Curt - What I hear is "You're retired and don't have anything else to do". They don't realize that it takes longer to do some of the things that we used to take for granted, like reading the tiny directions on pill bottles!
Garry - Even though I am not a boater, that is a fine looking boat to me. I might even consider getting on it. No kayaks or canoes for me!
Jerry - Did the playa dry out enough for them to use this year? I saw pictures in early June where it was still covered in water.
Johnny - "...oval on the floor..." That is a real misconception of folks when they see my train shed for the first time. I chuckle silently!

OK, Let's all go and get the day started. Everybody have a great Tuesday. Looks like we'll be in the new Coffee Shop by Thursday morning unless Louis gets on a roll.;) Kidding of course.

Willie

Good morning. We are starting off at a very smokey 60 degrees with an expected high in the mid 80's. The smoke is thicker and you can actually smell it this morning. We're not only getting smoke from the numerous fires here in Montana, but smoke from fires all the way to the west coast.

Willie - Happy to hear that you are high and dry. I have been watching the flooding on TV and really feel bad for those folks, but will have to commend them with so many people volunteering and helping those less fortunate. There has never been a storm like this before.

Garry - Sweet boat. Perfect for enjoying the lake. A few years ago we went to the NASCAR race at Pocono and stayed with my wife;s cousin who had a summer home on Lake Wallenpaupack and also had a pontoon boat. Really enjoyed getting out on the lake in the evening. A great way to enjoy a summer evening. I have seen video of the carp jumping in boars. Understand that they aren't very good to eat.

Got the Stewart F-7 in the mail yesterday when I went to the post office to pick up the rye bread that Ken in Maryland sent up. A sweet running little locomotive. Time to start ordering decals and detail parts. I can assume that the F-3 is also a generic F-3 shell so I know what it will also need.

Here's th erail photo for the day.

I don't know what ya did there Jerry, but it hurts my eyes to try to read all that.

A little rain here in King George, VA. I think its supposed to be a tropical storm, minus the wind and heavy rain.
I'm working from home today. The commute to work would have taken 1 1/2 hours due to wrecks on the freeway and surface streets.
Got my new laptop loaded up with the latest JAVA and JMRI downloads. I didn't have time to connect it to the layout last night. Hopefully, I can do that this evening.
