Running Bear's Coffee Shop June 2018

Sherrel - I think you're probably correct. The only info I can get on the photos is Cathiron WCML.

I came across this caboose a while back in my hoard and finally started putting it together before we left on out trip. Painted the grabs and put it on the layout. Here it is waiting for an outbound train to leave so it can pick up a few box cars and take them to the Northern Pacific tracks.

I doubt that it is anything like what the NP had, but it will work for me.

For those interested...the little steam loco n my video is a South East and Chatham Railway P-class loco hauling 2 Birdcage coaches. The P-class being so small usually hauled just 2-3 of those coaches. They were called Birdcage due to the rounded little cupola thingy on the end of the coach.

Good afternoon. Checking in quickly to have a cup in the new coffee shop.

Garry - Like the F units. Looks like you may have a herd of them.

Ken D&J - Looking forward to see your video. Always enjoy them.

Curt - Not good when you fry LED's.

After a long day yesterday, we decided to slow down a bit and took a couple of side trips to Mount Rushmore and Deadwood, SD. I normally don't gamble, but left the casino $200 ahead.

Just by coincidence I watched the Penn and Teller "Bullshit" episode about Mt Rushmore, a couple of days ago. We're going to stop there on our coming trek to Seattle, but I've always.beem more interested in the Crazy Horse memorial, and plan to spend some time there, as well. I've also finally gotten around to watching "Deadwood," so of course we'll be going there. It's taken 5 years, but it has finally sunk in that we can travel all we want, whenever we want, and I really enjoy long-distance driving. Besides, we've sworn off flying.

Today is another Work In The Basement day. There are three areas left and I think each will take a day or so, then I can start thinking seriously about trains and Legos. It's going to mainly depend on how long I can maintain interest. All my hobbies have fallen by the wayside for the last couple of years (haven't been shooting, either), but the cruise got me up off my butt and I'm actually getting a few things done.

I've been completely forgetting! While on our cruise, the last port of call was St. Kitts, where the must-do shore excursion is a narrow-gauge train ride that circles the island. The train and tracks, before tourism became a thing, once serviced the island's sugar plantations; now, the tour features narration, free booze and a quartet of singers from the island's high school, a long with absolutely gorgeous scenery.

Good Morning All. New place looks nice. 75° and sunny here in North Central Texas. Like Ken (D&J), i just got back from my morning walk, except I only go for 1.5 miles and I cool off in the pool. Only got to 94° yesterday, 98° predicted for today. Went for a visit to Home Depot yesterday while out for the grocery trek. Looked at vanities, tile, shower enclosures and faucets. Should have taken Greg's advice and only showed my wife two or three choices. Guess what? We still haven't made any firm decision and the contractor is due Monday.
On the way home, my wife got the hankering for chicken tencers for lunch, so we stopped at a fast food drive thru which I rarely do (fast food or drive thru's). So let's see how smart this young lady is! I ordered eight tenders (some for leftovers today) and an order of fries. Got no catsup for the fries or gravy for the chicken (wife got gravy), but I got ten pieces of chicken. Only got charged for eight. She must have liked the way I looked!!!;)
Hmmmh! This website is off line for the second time this morning, it was off before I went for a walk, as well as for a while yesterday morning. Hasn't happened to me in a few weeks; this is not an issue with my ISP or my computer as every other website is working.
Out in the train shed, I did some more painting and ground cover in my project area and finished the tanker kit that I was working on.
Garry - Great picture of the Santa Fe unit.
Curt - Did you figure out why the LED's were blowing up?
Joe - I took the picture while playing around with the delay function on my new (to me, hand me down from wife) camera. If it had numbers across the bottom it could pass as one taken by the DOC!
Everybody have a great Friday.
Willie

Beady - Thanks for posting the photos of the train ride. Free booze, you can't beat that. Spent a lot of time cruising around the Caribbean when I was in the Navy, but never got there.

We have been to both Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial before. We were thinking of going to the Crazy Horse Memorial again, but some among us was more interested in Deadwood. The house was the winner in their case. I just smiled and patted my wallet.

Say, BEADY ... I owe you an apology. The wedding we attended a while back on the Queen Mary - They had a very large model of the ship, which I could not get a clear photo of because of all the gawkers, was made from over 250,000 Legos. Must have been 12-16 feet long. I meant to go back and try and get some pics, but got sidetracked. Perhaps the "free booze" (open bar) had something to do with it?
Neat train ride there for U.

I only made two several trips to the Bahama Islands, but the wife wants to return to Atlantis for a vacation since I will not go on a cruise.

Rode our Gold Wing to Mt Rushmore and toured the Black Hills and made it to Wyoming for a lunch. Amazing work on the Mt Rushmore faces, one mistake blasting and you're down to three face and a half faces.

Just home from the cabin. Have a bird called a Red Jumpstart hitting the windows on the cabin and my truck. He's been at it for several weeks. No just doesn't want to give up. The truck will need a washing tomorrow!!!

Loved Deadwood, SD and lost a few $$$ playing Blackjack.

I played some slots yesterday at a Bar & Grill near the cabin and turned $10 into $40 and quit playing while I was ahead.

That's all for now.

Greg

Afternoon All,

Did some chores this AM, then continued putting the shingles on the roof. I'm about 2/3 complete. I'm glad the LHS only had 1 pack of shingles since it will be more than enough for the job. I should finish that job tomorrow. The Soundtraxx speaker and baffle arrived today. I only ordered them Saturday afternoon (regular USPS) from a company in NY. All I can say is WOW:). The feel like temp today is 100F. Summer is here.

VA Ken- Shame there was only 400 riders but I imagine it was because of the rain. I'm glad that you finally got the video machine working correctly.

Willie- I see you caught one of the FL state animals (armadillo, gator, and our new one, the boa constrictor).

Gene- Nice looking switcher and neat video.

Chet- WOW. Your layout 4 track mainline looks extremely realistic. Great job on your caboose.

Beady- I haven't been on that particular train but I was on another one in the Caribbean (can't remember which island) that had a RS unit for motive power and previous RR coach cars.

I hope everyone has a good night.

Greg, I've heard the comment about not going on a cruise before, from my brother for one (my ringtone for him is Groucho singing "Whatever it is, I'm against it"), and I honestly don't understand. We've been on three cruises, and are looking for more.

I'm not into casinos; I'm more interested in seeing Hickock's and Calamity Jane's graves. On the return route well be dipping a bit South to Colorado, to visit Doc Holiday. Also plan to stop off at Devil's Tower and the Little Bighorn, and do some dinosaur hunting.

Been pricing camping trailers, and there are several models our outback could tow and that cost less than $10k. OTOH, that $10k represents a lot of nights in a motel, with comfortable beds, usually with meals that someone else cooks, and a room that we don't have to set up or take down on either side of a long, tiring day.

What? WHAT???!!! Damn you! Damn you, sir!

Actually, I'm amazed at what can be done with Legos. As it is, a good many of their kits are designed by their customers, like the recent 1:110-scale Saturn V, and several versions of the Titanic have built.

A plus for RVs is that you know who slept in that bed last night, and you know if that person had bedbugs (or bubonic plague). When we started traveling with RVs, our main reasons were not only the above, but most motels didn't allow pets.
Of course, the other side of the coin is trying to find a place to park for the night, a truck that guzzles gas like a drunken sailor on shore leave, and finding a place to store it when you aren't camping in it.

All of the above,Terry!
Not only was it good for the pets, but it was nice just pulling off for a rest stop, having good sandwich, letting the dogs do their thing, and off to the next fuel stop! LOL
I'm not sure how iti is back there, but it was not even school break time and most of the grounds were starting to fill up.
I could go on ... but both of us sort of wish that we had done the trailer or 5th wheel. There were several times that we needed a car to roam around in - would have been nice to disconnect and drive off.
GREG: Spousal Unit loves cruising- not me! After three days I am ready to get off the ship - I just become bored. I like to look at scenery - not just water. She and one of her sisters go at least once a year - I think they have one planned to Egypt on the Nile River sometime this year. You should take the Alaska one; I would go on it again just to ride the train at Skagway and the calving? of the glaciers is something to see!

Good morning. It's clear and 58.

Sherrel, you should look into getting a toad for your motor home.

Good Morning All. 69° and clear here, although there's heavy cloud cover shielding the sun in the east, rain about 20 miles away. I got .6" in the rain gauge yesterday morning, and the cloudiness held the high to 81°, far below what was predicted. Saw two additional baby armadillos yesterday morning during the rain. They're not doing much damage yet, so I will wait until drier weather to catch them. Garden-wise, I am continuing to pick tomatoes and squash. The heat appears to have beat the green beans this spring, so I will replant in the fall. It's OK though, as I still have 10 pints left from last year.
Spent a good portion of the day with my wife at Lowe's yesterday, looking at the same vanities, same shower enclosures, same tile, same faucets and stuff; that we looked at last week in Home Depot, all with the same result of no decision. I really don't care as long as it works. I did finally convince her that just because there's 44" between the wall and edge of toilet, you don't put a 42" vanity in there. Recommended building practices dictates a maximum of 38" to allow for one's shoulders etc. Fortunately the contractor isn't quite done with his current job so we're not holding things up, yet. My buddy isn't able to do the job, so he recommended one of his friends, who can do tile work along with plumbing and carpentry. My buddy cannot do tile work and we would have had to hire someone else anyway. I have never done any and we don't need any faulty work with it. I'll stick with the electrical which the contractor can do but doesn't like. I look forward to expanding my Spanish vocabulary as well.
This left very little time in the train shed, so I just puttered around and ran trains. I did apply dots of superglue to some of the wires/insulators on the utility poles that I put in. Still getting the tension/sag right.

Chet - Nice caboose pictures.
Beady - Those are some nice pictures of St. Kitts. The fifth one reminds me of some neighborhoods in New Orleans when we lived there in the 50's. The whole town went downhill after that era. Free booze! I'll take that any time.
Curt - The armadillo is the official state small mammal for Texas.

Everybody have a great day.

If anyone hears me say I'm thinking of buying another kato loco with modeler applied bits, please send me a brick so I can whack myself around the ears with it.
