Morning all,

Time for a Blue Plate breakfast this morning and coffee.

Clear and Moony (according to a local weather guy) turning sunny this morning. High of 48*

Well, after buying the new laptop, I grudgingly took my 12 year old desktop from Windows 7 to 10. When you have the right programs, the free upgrade still works. I'm losing a lot of games on CD that won't work under Windows 10, but worked under Windows 7 when a particular patch update was removed. I'd been putting it off, but the son reminded me that he still had his XP desktop that wasn't connecting to anything and would still run those games. Now I just have to keep the old beast running a while longer. I don't do anything much with it except connect to the office and then remote into whichever computer I need to work with from home. I don't get on the internet from home as I do it way too much at the office.

Nothing on the train side yesterday and I may have to escort a young man to scouts this evening, so no trains tonight.

Good Morning All. 35° and clear. Other than a brief dip tonight, it appears that we won't see another freeze for at least ten days, near 70's for a high beginning Monday. Spent some time raking leaves yesterday. Just as I finished (for now), a crew from the local phone provider showed up and dug a 250' trench across my front yard to install fiber optic cabling to the house. Trench goes all the way to the right to near that road.

The original trunk lines were installed in 2010 but never connected; the feeder lines were installed early this summer. Tuesday the feeders and trunks were connected with the closest active line, yesterday the customer feeds were installed (some of them). Now just waiting on installers to make the final connections. None of this would be possible without a state grant. The feeder box in front of my house serves only three customers and is 1.5 miles from the next nearest box...we're at the end of the line; hardly a profit center for the phone company. A stipulation of the grant will not allow the phone company to raise the rates of existing landline customers. Neighbors who dropped their landlines will have to pay for installation if they choose. Satellite internet is not exactly an option out here and cell phone data usage rates would bankrupt many. Not sure how the increased capacity will affect me as I already have pretty good DSL, and we don't stream stuff.

An extra glass of OJ this morning Flo, along with a couple of ham, sausage, egg and cheese biscuits.

Thanks for the likes and comments regarding yesterday's grocery store publicity shot and the helicopter views of Maultown; Jerome, Sherrel, Chad, Patrick, Chet, Joe, Phil, Hughie, Curt, Johnny, Tom.

A short time was spent in the train shed yesterday, at least it was warm enough for short sleeves. Just did some minor work on the two structures in the rehab mode including adding some additional figures. I am rebuilding the "over sidewalk" sign for the drugstore as part is missing. No pictures yet.

Sherrel - The century is only 20 years gone so far.
Chad -
It looks like when someone leaves the forum their posts disappear? Am I seeing that correctly?
In some cases the answer is yes, and that includes PM's as well. However replies quoted by others in their posts seem to remain.
David - Thanks for checking in. I am doing well and I hope that you will return to good health.
Ken - Looking forward to following your progress as I have a number of areas that resemble yours.

Everybody have a great day.. I'll be headed out on the weekly grocery/beer trek soon.

Good morning everyone. 33 and sunny out there - we're getting a break from the Canadian / Montanan weather!! Hi, Flo - I'll take an apple fritter, if Garry and David Trussrod left any - if they're all gone, I'll have a couple of chocolate croissants, and a big cup of coffee, and 2 eggs over medium, and some really crisp bacon, a couple of pancakes - oh, hey, just bring the entire menu!! I'm hungry :D

Tom, TexasHobo, Flip, Boris, Chad, Sherrel, Patrick, Curt, and anyone I may have missed - thanks for the likes and comments from yesterday.
Willie - we're recovering from that blast from the north - you are, too, probably - but it's probably a warning about what kind of winter it's going to be around here!
CCoffran - You're in Lebanon, NH? I have a close cousin in New London - not far from you. He's retired AF. Been there to visit him just once, came from Vermont through Lebanon to get to his place. If we get up that way again, I'll contact you and maybe we can get together for coffee.
Tom - Prayers that your health situation gets figured out real soon.
Toot - That tornado scene is insane. What a great idea!

Got a lot of parts for the BaitAndTackle shop painted last night, and a few things glued. This weekend that structure should really begin taking shape. I'll post progress photos next week.

In the meantime, someone commented earlier this week about my neatly organized paint rack. Thanks, but that's deceiving - I had just finished a structure build (the Walthers ranch house) and was just starting this Bait&Tackle build, but I always clean the main work area in between projects. That's the only reason that paint rack looked nice. Here's what my modeling work area looks like now (and pretty much all the time):

Underneath the main workbench also serves as our tornado shelter, and you can see some of our emergency supplies down there - food, batteries, flashlights, radio, battery-operated TV, etc.

That's it for now. Breakfast is served!
Have a good day everyone.

This is just a quick update on what I mentioned yesterday about possibly swapping out the narrow+tall gray building with a DPM 'homegrown' brick warehouse. I recovered it from the attic, did a mock-up test fit, and voila - it fit perfectly, as if it had been intended for that spot all along.

Ken: Looks and fits a whole lot better than the other building.

Can you run a VM of some sort with an older Windows in it for the games?

MikeInHubCity:
on the way home from State Fair Park. MOH/chauffeur wanted to stop at the Ben Franklin in Oconomowoc (she wanted an excuse to head west & avoid traffic heading north
This Ben Franklin used to carry model railroading supplies, but I haven't been there in years. I remember all the BB kits in a display case.

Yes, we are receiving a bunch of snow here in this part of Wisconsin. Just a dusting yesterday and last night.

On a side note: Anyone subscribe to Cowcatcher Magazine?

I usually pick up a free copy at the train shows and mentioned I'd like to subscribe. My son got me a subscription for Christmas. I haven't read it yet as I got the mail when it showed up instead of the kid. They sent it before my family was expecting, so once again "snoopy" dad spoiled his Christmas. I figure the next issue will be out just before Christmas as well....

Patrick -- Have you checked Steam and GOG for these older games. I bought Age of Empires 2 and Age of Mythology remastered on Steam during the holiday sale last year. I was able to get Warcraft 1 and 2 on GOG for $6 about a month ago. Each site has a wish list option, I get notified when any wish listed games go on sale.

Something about paying again for something I own outright.....

But I haven't played them myself in over a year and I do have a way to get at them if\when I want. While a virtual machine doesn't work I can still create a dual-boot setup. I'll look into Steam. I do have an account, but haven't been on that in a couple of years either.

Thanks.

No as these particular games require access to the CD drives and the "fix" in Windows 7 killed them about 5 years ago.

PC World Safedisc DRM

Many of these PC games are still darn right fun to play (Age of Empires series, Sierra's Roger Wilco series, etc.)

Couldn't you create a VM with an older version of Win 7 or even WinXP or something? I have a bunch of older games -- some never opened -- that I will attempt to get working through a VM (especially since I am Mac based).

Good morning. A better start to the day today. First off, I don;t have to leave the house. Started off at 37 degrees at 0500 and should get up into the mid 40's with cloudy skies.

Curt - Like the photos of the fueling facility. You really do such a nice job
weathering the platforms.

Terry - Ain't that just about right. Another manufacturer not willing to back up their product. Hope you can find the parts.

Joe - I forgot to comment on your port scene. Live it. I would have liked to have been able to model such a facility being ex Navy, but with the room I had to work with chose to model the area where we live. Waiting for more photos as you progress with the build.

Greg - Nice photos. I do not run trains in total darkness with the town lit. I wouldn't be able to see the trains. Just the town area of Logan is lit along with a few buildings in Churchill.

Lee - That was nice of you to offer to take care of the body on Willie's layout.

Mikey - Thanks for the comment. I do like that Suudebaker. It is a '53 Starlight. I had been looking for a real one for years to restore into a custom. I think it was the best looking car of that era, although way ahead of the times. I currently own a '62 Gran Trismo Hawk with the R-4 package, with the Paxton Supercharger and 4 speed manual. Currently put away in the shop for the winter. Here's a photo I took years ago. Interesting tire ad. Prices have changed. When my wife had a tire fail it was time to replace them. I was looking for a good all season radial for her car and needed it NOW. Ended up the only ones I could find in stock were Nokian tires. Best rating in the industry but $638 with discount. They are fantastic on winter roads.

View attachment 41498 View attachment 41499 Still a good looking car today, as well as the '53.

IBKen - I found hydrocal at a building supply outlet meant more for the professional trades. You might check around your area. You have a better chance that I do up here. Like the photos.

Johnny - The build is moving along nicely. On the weather, we had the coldest October in history up here.

Guess I'll have to dive into the photo archives again. Haven't been down in the train room since last week.

Chet I thought so too

Well since the light Porn and the Political garbage is gone maybe I’ll start posting. This is a train forum and that’s why I chose this one seemed one of the best let’s keep it that way. Have respect for who started this thread Running Bear don’t think he would appreciate this kinda garbage that’s been going on for a couple days
