I'm definitely a proponent of the "be prototypical when you can, don't sweat it when you can't" school. e.g. I have a Burlington Zephyr set that I dearly love. Would the Burlington Zephyr ever possibly have run on what I model? Nope. Does it run regularly? Yep. I tell myself it's an "exhibition tour" and let it go...

When I modeled the modern era, I could run a steam-powered passenger train as an 'excursion.' It might bend the rules to model 1956 and run modern trains once in a while, but only if you constrain your thinking of time being linear and uni-directional
