Please share your weathered coal hopper techniques

I wish to weather some steam era coal hoppers. I want to do it with something non permanent because these are not all my cars, and they are all brand spankin new. Looking to use chalks or something that make them look like used coal cars complete with coal dust/dirt and rust, but not permanent. Is this possible? Can you show me an example with basic instructions. Thanks again Dave

You can use chalk to weather anything, including hoppers. The problem is that it will be removed by handling unless fixed in place with something like dullcote. As long as you don't handle the cars by touching any of the weathered areas, the chalk will stick and look fine. It can then be removed with a solution of a few drops of dishwashing detergent and water. You can find basic instructions on weathering with chalks by a a search here or on Google. The only difference is that you'd skip that last step, sealing the chalks to the car.
