Pics of Pullman Car shops in Georgia

I found this website looking for something completely different, and thought y'all might find it interesting. I'm trying to find out more info. Nice photos here.

This is the Pullman Car Co. factory in Kirkwood, GA.

More Pullman Car Co. Repair facility pics. I'm not sure if this is the facility in Kirkwood, or in Atlanta.

those pics are pretty cool. It's amazing that the place is still there. Is it some sort of landmark or something? What was even cooler was that old amtrak car sitting in the repair shop with no trucks still. That place would make a great shop for another railcar manufacturer or another shop for a current one.

What a great shop. The inside, with all the graffiti, looks cool. That could look nice on a modern railroad layout.
Who's taking on the build project for this one? I you do post pix.

I'd love to do something like this with a layout that's about ten times larger than what I have now. :) I didn't even know Pullman had car shops in Georgia. Anyone know more history of these facilities?

This is pretty much all I have found so far. Kirkwood is located in what is now Atlanta. It seems the yard is near Mile post 1 on either the A&WP, or Atlantic & Western. (Info so far is unclear which)

The official name is Pratt-Pullman Yard.

It was used by the New Georgia Railroad, a tourist railroad, in the 1990's

It appears the State wants to allow Georgia Power to build a power station there. Seems the neighborhood doesn't want that to happen.

There are some cool pics in the links provided.

Pullman, Kimball and Ramsey Sleeping Car Co. formed in Atlanta, GA on May 19, 1866. This was an effort by Pullman to counter the control of sleeping-car service in the South by Southern Transportation Co.

Very cool, Rotor. I had no idea Pullman was ever in a competitive battle with any passenger car company in the South. The first Atlanta History link would seem to indicate that Pullman didn't buy out the Pratt Company and convert it for car maintenance and rebuilding until the 1920's, which seems awfully late to be competing with another car company. How long did the Southern Transportation Company last?

What's interesting is the different state of "graffiti" condition from link to link. At one point the UP cab actually looks like a cab, then it has some graffiti, then LOTS of graffiti. Same with the Amtrak car.

Great pics - thanks for posting Rotor.

From researching the Pullman shop, I also saw mention of a pullman shop in Alabama. Maybe B'ham?

I'll see if I run across it again.

I've located the shop here in Atl, and plan on making a trip up there next week.

I don't know yet, but maybe at least until 1913. I haven't found too much info yet.

The facility that is now the Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth, Georgia used to be a railcar repair facility. I'm not familiar with its history, but I doubt that it was owned or operated by Pullman.
